Sperm Plugs?

I just learned from another thread that showing a female to a sexually mature male can cause him to have a sperm plug. None of my males have ever had one and i think i would have noticed THAT. But are they suppose to have some? Is it healthier to have one from time to time so that you don't end up with a prolapse? Does anyone know of another site that might give me more info on this stuff?

Thanks,
Debby

I can't refute that info, cause i've never read anything one way or the other, regarding sperm plugs and females.

But, my guys all get them and they shed them regularly. I don't know if its a function of seeing a female, but it could be. Seems normal to me .

What I have read, according to Rob Coke DVM, is that hypovitamosis A ,( ya.. I know .. I'm on a vitamin A kick these days), can cause impacted sperm plugs.

Hey guys Im the one that said it seems my guy sheds more sperm plugs when ever he sees my female. But again im not sure on how many is normal. Most of the time I see his on the branches and everyonce in a while in his poop. What is normal or does this vary between chams! I have a male panther that has them but my jacksons doesnt.

Now, come to think of it, my guys do the same thing. Those sperm plugs are produced regardless, it just takes a sexy female to coax them out...

Seriously, I think the males bits and pieces get a little jumpy when they see a female. it simply dislodges the plug. Thats my theory and Im sticking to it...LOL

So do you think this is a good thing? Now i'm worried because i've never had my males have one. Is there anything else that you can do to have them produce one instead of showing them the girls? My girls are all kinda shy and i really don't won't to put them through that if i don't have to. I've got a full grown male veiled for over 2 yrs now and he has never had one. How bad is this? Is there any clue that they are going to dispose of one before they do it? Is this related to prolapse?

I'm guessing your males pass sperm plugs on a regular basis.
There's not much to the plug when it's passed. It looks like a bit of shed skin.
Usually comes out with the urates and fecal matter.
Sometimes it hangs on for a bit but gets brushed off on a branch.
The big built up impacted plugs are not that common and as long as your guys are passing a small amount regularly you will never see that.

Thanks Brad. Now i can relax. That makes me feel a whole lot better. I thought they were all that big. No wonder i didn't see any. Any pics of the reg ones so i can know what to look for?

I agree with Brad, that your males have probably been shedding them. You may find them as bits of dried yellow stuff on the branches or vines. Our male veiled, Guido, was shedding them long before he ever saw a female.

all vertabrates create testosterone, which is just a compound cells break down from cholesterol, studies are being done now in almost every species in the world that links testosterone levels to both genetics as well as social/environmental factors

for example

a male human starts to get into girls(no pun intended lol) during adolescence and then a huge spike of liking the ladies around 16 to say 22

creation of testosterone at this time tells the brain to do what is best for its genetic future,
the brain starts to notice behaviors that females respond to and like and tries to recreate them when special females are watching. adolescent boys often think being daring will attract women as this gets their attention.

the brain works this way because over time(a long time long enough for evolving and adapting) the human brain has been rewarded for such testosterone driven thought by reproduction....cuz lets just face it your daring tricks will work on some stupid girl out there.....which is why humans are more advanced, we'd rather mate with that one, than anyone, but like animals will settle for what is available lol if reproduction depends on it

the male can attract as many females as he can and have a baby with each of those, where as you don't see this behavior in females because they can't have 15 offspring

so to answer your question i'm sure that a sexually mature chameleon being teased with a female, will in a sense think differently and set him self up for better chances of reproduction

we see this socially in every species on the planet with a back bone how serious is that? your brain is way smarter than you know
