Supplement Question...

hello all,

I am getting my Cham on Sunday, and have been out to get everything I need.
Every site says different on what supplements should be used and how often.

I have purchased, vet ark Nutrobal and Calci Dust.

First off, I want to check if I need anymore and secondly how often I should give each to my 3 months old Cham?

Thanks in advance

Thanks, that's excellent.

He's a panther and will be indoors. So it seems I have the right stuff. Will be gut loading his live food as well.
Cheers!!

What kind of chameleon are you getting? If a veiled or panther then a three month old that stays indoors would need plain calcium without d3 just about everyday. Calcium with D 3 twice a month and a multi vitamin twice a month. If you are getting a veiled or Panther you might find my blog for new keepers helpful.

I think blanket replies like this are misleading

This can be totally dependent on product potency

In all fairness, Jann did say plain calcium, vitamin powder and calcium with D3, not the specific products that were in the OP's post. I think the advice given was correct and good.

Generally the only vitamins to be concerned with are the fat soluble ones....like D3 and A...the rest of them should pass through the system and out.

Regarding the calcium with D3...it needs to be in balance with vitamin A and if only used lightly twice a month it leaves the chameleon to produce the rest of the D3 from its exposure to the UVB light...so hopefully that's not ever a problem either.

Just my opinion.

Every powder of d3 or vitamins can have different units per dosage

Hi,

IMO nutrobal is not good for chams. It can work for another reptiles, but there are better products for chams nowadays.
I think it would be better to buy another multivitamins like the zoomed.
Then have some plain calcium (there are many brands) and calcium+D3 (sticky tongue farm, zoomed, repashy)

Just my 2 cents.

This was discussed a couple of weeks ago. There are huge differences in D3 content between brands.

That's my whole point in the 2x/month recommendation.

It's such an inexact thing given all the factors.
Brand
Number of feeders
Amount eaten before dust falls off
Surface area of feeders
Size of chameleon
Water intake of chameleon
Minerals/vitamins present inside feeders....

How can there be such a blanket methodology stayed WHILE implying it really matters that much

If we dust lightly only twice a month and the D3 not needed on those two days is stored in the body the chameleon has about 28 other days in that month to use the excess D3 we might have given the chameleon on that day. If I'm thinking right, unless the amount of D3 ingested on those two days is more than what the chameleon would use on the approximately 30 (two weeks and two weeks) days between dusting with the D3 it's not too much...it just means that the chameleon doesn't have to sit under the UVB to produce more/enough D3 for the month. Correct me if I'm wrong.
