Surgery for eggbound girl

Hi everyone, I’m new on here but have been reading a lot of the previous posts. I have an 18 month old veiled girl. The vet said she was eggbound after doing an x ray. She’s had 2 injections to try to help her lay with no success. She spent last night at the bottom of her cage, hasn’t attempted any digging and was starting to look tired, not moving as much so we reluctantly took her to the vet this morning to have the surgery as they advised. Has anyone had this surgery where it’s gone well and the chameleon recovered? I need some good news stories (already read a few of the others that didn’t go so well) 😢

Absolutely! You did the absolute best thing! Getting her help immediately. Not having surgery would of been bad. She would of stayed eggbound & more than likely passed away.
She has a great chance of surviving this. I truly hope she makes it. ♡♡

Hi and welcome! I’m sorry that your little girl has to have surgery and pray all will go well. We can’t always go by the results and experiences that others have had. I once had my young and healthy male dog die during a routine neutering. Every surgery on every creature isn’t without risks, but sometimes we have no choice but to take that risk. Each chameleon is different and your experience will be unique to you and your girl. You have been prompt in getting her to the vet, which always helps improve prognosis. Sadly, many wait too long and by the time they take their cham in to the vet, it is much too late.
I do wonder about the reasons why she became egg bound. If you’d like, you can do a husbandry review and see if there’s anything that needs to be improved to prevent any other illness. There’s a massive amount of outdated and just plain wrong care info about chameleons out there that many have fallen victim to. I really hope your girl will be ok and please let us know how she does.
 
Thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely check it out. I’ve just called the vet and the surgery went well, they took 45 eggs and said she’d started making a 2nd batch so there was no way she could have passed them. We’ve got her home now, very tired but she’s eaten so hopefully that’s a good sign 🤞 I’ll update again in a few days, thanks for the support

Just stopping in to say I'm sending lots of positive energy your way. Great job getting her the help she needed. She is a lucky girl to have you as a keeper. Reading other folks' experiences can be scary, it can make bad outcomes sound like the norm. I hope she pulls comes out on the other side stronger than ever.

So very good to hear that the surgery went well. 😊 I hope she has a very uneventful recovery.

Thank you, I really hope Cammy does as well as Lola.
Our vets have a reptile specialist so we’re really lucky as they’re very close by. She said she’s done lots of this type of surgery. I’ll post some pics of Cammy later.
 
How long after the surgery did your girls pick up @jannb ? Cammy walked around a bit last night to get 2 locusts but this morning she’s not very active, just hiding behind her plant. She’s alert with her eyes open just watching me but no climbing etc as yet, is this usual after surgery? The vet wants me to send a video tomorrow to see how she is.
