Taking Down Local Pet "Store"

Hey, well after another visit to the local reptile store, i have decided something needs to be done to take this place down, it is a privatly owned reptile and exotic pet store here in red deer alberta. I was in the store today looking to see if any changes have been made, and came across a few things.
For starters there was a wc chameleon in what looked like a 30 gal screen cage, sounds good so far, but, the cage was on the floor, with no source of light or heat, also with one branch on the floor and a few random leaves, hardly a home. Some other things i noticed was in about a 80 gal cage about 7 foot long bearded dragons with a few other skinks of the same length. they were basically having to stand on top of eachother. He has some sugar gliders in a 360 screen enclosure with a single branch a a little water dish on the floor. After looking closer i noticed he had a few large reptiles sitting on top of the cage which were terrifying the sugar gliders. He has snakes in cages where the floor is basically coated in feces, and he had another very large iguana in a cage that it could barely turn around in. The owner is often drunk or high while at work and atmits it almost with pride. Every other word come out is f#$% this and F*** that. i dont know what legally can be done but i have to get this shop closed down. i cant stand going in there and seeing all the reptiles and other animals being treated like a profit. If any of you know of any laws or anything that can be used to stop this guy PLEASE pass them on to me, I am going to head to the library and look up some laws, and also head down to talk to the spca and see what else can be done. There is also this link of reviews of his store which i found kinda familiar.

I know of two things that will get a death house shut down 1 no food or water 2 no heat if its cold they will shut that place down. There was the place here on Long Island called reptile museum I think, it had everything waterfalls, rivers, mountain rain forest this place was huge. They shut him down because of lack of heat in the winter took every reptile in the place. But thats here in the states I dont know about where you live.

Good luck hope something gets done. Theres sometimes where i want petco to be shut down by the way they treat their reptiles, especially the chameleons. On more than one occasion I've pointed out issues with their chameleon setups but of course they never do anything about it cause they're petco employees that dont give a damn.

Seeking legal advice is fine and I wish you success in closing down any pet store that is not caring for their animals properly. While general discussion of your situation and how to take a stand against local pet stores is completely fine, bringing in a specific name is currently something we try to avoid.

I've seen similar pet stores and their neglected animals, and can understand your frustration. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about canadian law or what local authorities you should be contacting.

Hey, sorry i was unaware of the no name rule. And yea in alot of his cages i have seen no source of constant water, and have still to the day to see a single lamp. weater he has underpad heating i will have to look closer next time but find it a huge doubt as that would "cost him to much" lol. he wanted to sll me a batch of 150 silk worms , saw at least 30 dead, for 60 bucks. kinda had a laugh at that one. But i will call around tommorow and see what can be done. maybe if i cant shut him down i will have to open up my own reptile store and just shut him down that way. :)

Alright there's a few things
you live in a fairly large city
there's going to be some sort of department that focuses
upon animal welfare- get them involved.

Take some pictures and video of the place to back up your statements
If they're that wasted.. it'll be easy to have some distract them while
you do your work building your case.

make copies of all the evidence and supply everything to the city
then the media the next day.
call and follow up in a nice way with both and see what happens
It may take some time... but once the ball gets rolling
it won't take much effort to keep the pressure on them.

If they don't shape up... they'll get forced out.

The pet trade isn't what I think it should be in too many cases
personally I would very much like to see lowlifes "harshly corrected".

Yea my mom did something like that, but got an article in the florida today.
She had pictures and everything. The article was "Puppies for Profit"
One week after the article was posted they got shut down.
DO IT!!!

Hey, sorry i was unaware of the no name rule. ...
It's not your fault, there currently is no specific rule. A set of consistent polices regarding related matters is still being debated privately. Until that is finalized, situations involving possible defamation to a company or person are being taken case by case.

I think Jeweledchameleons has offered some great advice. This is what I would do if I were in a similar situation.
