Talk to me about misting systems?

Ok so payday is here and it's time to get Ziggy a misting system. I see there's tons of different ones out there so I'll spare everyone that expense. My question is how often and how long should this thing go off for? And what is a good timer to use? Reason I ask is I'm going to get a base model kit that does not include a timer.

Also is a raindome system better than a misting system?

Any help would be appreciated.

From what I've read, you pretty much need to experiment to see how much to run it. You want it to be able to completely dry in between sessions, to prevent bacteria growth. More humid regions probably need less frequent misting. I have a mistking that I run for 5 minutes, with 2 nozels, 5 times a day. I might even look at increasing this. But I live in a very arid state. In about a week I went through 7 gallons of water, and maybe 1 gallon was left in my drain reservoir. I also have a large enclosure.

As far as timers go, I of course use the one that came with my mistking. They are $30 by itself. I got one at Walmart awhile back, and paid maybe $15. The only thing the mistking had over the cheaper model was style, 3 more time slots, and being able to customize specific weeks, which I don't use anyway. I believe it is made by brinks. Hope this helped!

What kind of cham do you have?

My experience is rain systems work better to stimulate them to drink.

My chams have always run away from the mist nozzle when it goes off, but they will stand under the rain and drink w/o getting annoyed.

I have a dripper going for all my chams and have never, not even once, seen any of them drink from the mistking.

I have a male veiled. :) Also with manually spraying 2 times a day the humidity is always at 50%. It's crazy where I am here in NC. I was curious if I could just get away with a rain system.

Mine drinks off the leaves. :s Do your chams actually open their mouths to drink from the rain machines?

I've had two misting systems - a monsoon and a aquazamp raindome - My Jackson will sit in the rain to drink - flapneck and panther will usually drink after it goes off from the leaves - though I've seen the panther go to get a drink when it rains- The flapneck is shy though and has only recently let me see her eat - let alone drink. I always had problems getting the Jackson to drink with the monsoon.
The timer on the monsoon broke after a month and then totally broke in about 4- I use the timer I bought for the monsoon on the raindome - I also had great customer service with the aquazamp-
Don't get a monsoon-

Carlton had the best post I've ever seen about how to set timers on any systems but I never can find it when I look for it - It should be a sticky - It was a reply to a similar question - I live in a humid state and run it for two longs and a short - but there are other factors like how long it takes for your chameleon to drink and such that come into play -

I'm using a mist king starter kit and run it for 2 minutes at a time, every 3 hours starting at 8am and ending at 8pm.

My panther doesn't like to be misted by it directly so I made sure he has a basking spot thats out of the spray and now he doesnt even flinch when it turns on.
After it turns off, he'll promptly walk over and lick up what ever he wants off the leaves. Never had an issue with dehydration.

Actually, the water falls on their heads (Jacksons chams), rolls down to their mouth. I see their mouth open and close.
Panthers and veiled drink that way too, but also lick the leaves, lap the water that is dripping into a tiny cup, or zap the water drops as they fall.

there really isn't a lot of diff ones avail.. Kevin @ Aquazamp is the person you want to talk to his customer service is top notch an your chams will love the rain dome!!!

do something a bit different. In between all these. I used the ExoTerra Monsoons. I love them. And O have the nozzles at the very top corners of the screened cage. When they spray, the cone of mist distributes, and some goes down onto the decor, and some goes along the top screen, collects, and makes a 6-10" by 6-10" driptray (essentially). Kinda the best of both worlds.

we have a young Panther Chameleon, and set up with the Rain Dome system from the beginning. It is fantastic! Set up was easy and customer service is top notch. I highly recommend!
