Tartar?

Can a chameleon get tartar? A reptil expert was here and examined my Panther and said he had tartar but I can't find any information about it online.

Can, what he thought was tartar instead be mouth rot?

In my experience I have never heard of chameleons having tartar, but thats just me, maybe someone else has.

Mouth rot is pretty common and does have puss-like excrement that may look like tartar.

Pictures always help us identify the problem.

I wonder if your vet thought that brownish coloration on the cham's teeth was a sign of tartar? Some chams have browner teeth but it's normal for them.

Mouth rot would involve the gums, the soft tissue inside the mouth instead, not the teeth. The area would swollen, red or pink, with patches of pale cheesy coloration. Sometimes chams get an infection at the corners of their mouth, but again, the area would swell, look infected and patchy.

If you can brush a dog's teeth, why not your cham? Walk into walmart, and ask 'what aisle are your chameleon toothbrushs on?' I agree, just make sure he doesn't have mouth rot, and relax. It's not like they are going to smile when you take their pix. He doesn't do meth? :D

No, he doesn't do meth - that I know of. hahaha

Thanks for the replies. I don't think it's rot because it doesn't look like you described it. Probably just spotted old brown teeth. I will have a closer look next time we open his mouth. Maybe take a photo as well.

Thanks again!
