They Won't Eat the Dubias?!?!

Okay I recieved my colony on Wednesday and ever since then I have been trying to get my Panthers to eat a roach or two since then and they just ignore them. I am getting frustrated! They won't eat unless I dump a load of crickets in his cage and then they hide in the plants and chirp all night. I want them to eat dubias out of a cup but they wont and I am getting aggrevated... I put a super in the cup with some roaches to see if i could trick him... and he strategically shoots a perfect shot making sure he wont get the roach... but that is the only thing he will eat from a cup. I even leave the cup with dubias right under his fav branch for a day.. didn't touch a one. It's like the only thing he wan'ts is supers and I am not going to let him eat only those. My Fem Veiled Caddie has been munchin' down the roaches, but my panthers picky atitude is begining to frustrate me. Today before I left for work I moved McLovin' to the large 4x2x2 screen enlosure I have out for suning right now... When I go home for lunch I will try to put some roaches in there and see if he will eat them if they free roam. I can't let the roaches free roam on there inside cage... If my roomates ever found a roach out I would be homeless. Any ideas on weening them to roaches?

I know how you feel. Mine wont cup feed roaches ether. I just let them free range and keep an eye on them. You should try it and see how that goes just dont lose site of them since you never free ranged a roach. They will stay on the screen I have never had one go to the bottom of the cage.

Some CB Panthers are picky and won't eat them. I have a few picky ones that won't touch them. It's always best to test something out, I hope you didn't buy a huge colony.

Please don't tell me that:(... I've got plenty of herps to feed these roaches to so i'm not worried about wasting my money... But I am so sick of crickets it is rediculous... I hope they get over it. Has anyone else had this issue and been able to ween them onto them? I am wondering if it will just take time offering them.

Bearded dragons and Veiled Chams LOVE them, but some CB Panthers are pretty picky with Dubia. That's my experience with them. With those "picky" panthers that won't eat the dubia, I feed mainly dusted superworms and crickets. Superworms have a long shelf life, so it's also a nice feeder like Dubia, only not as nutritional.

I was always told not to use supers as a staple. I thought they were too high in fat... But if not then I am excited... Number one, I've got my super farm going right now and my Pupae should be beetles any day now; and number two.. He LOVES supers! He sees me grab the bin and comes up to the front to eat it out of my hand. I guess since they are not eating the Dubias, and I am done with crickets inside my house( the only time they get some is when they are out n their sunning cages) I should probably work on another diet for them... Any other recommendtaions to make sure they are eating healthy?

My Dragons do love the Dubias, but then they will eat anything i put in front of them. I actually have a colony of Giant Hissers that I feed my Dragons from... They eat those things like candy.

Havn't bred silkies since kindergarden!:D I am going to start looking now but any hints on where I should start getting a silkworm colony breeding?

My WC melleri wouldn't touch them for months. Last week, I let him go hungry for a few days. He loves crickets - so I found him a nice male with wings. He was reluctant at first. he ended up eatign it. Now, he loves the things.

Let them go hungry for a few days - it will not hurt them. They'll eat them eventually.

I am looking into the silkworms... Is anyone breeding thier own? What is the best way to get a reproducing colony going? Iwas reading you have to keep the eggs in the fridge for a couple weeks to simulte winter beofre they will hatch?

do a search for silkworms 101 it was a great thread ...i would post it but have not figured out how to do that

good luck

I wouldn't eat roaches either... I dont blame them!

lol....

My two veileds don't want to eat the roaches. Jake was eating them when I first introduced them to him. But now they will sit there for days. Fred doesn't seem to care. I am tempted to try some free range..... My lease is up at this apt. in a few months.....:D:p:D:p:D

I agree with Ponders, they definitely like the white, newly molted ones better. Also try starting them with smaller dubia, not the full grown ones. Just about all my panthers will eat them, only small ones, not full grown.

Finally!!!

YES!!! McLovin' discovered the Roaches today!!! Finally! I was beginning to think he would never do it. I let them go a day with no food... then came back with a couple smaller sized Dubias and they they still wouldn't touch them...It was funny I held it in my hand like I do the worms He got all excited and ready to shoot but when he noticed it was a Roach he stopped himself.. and looked at me like "You tried to trick me... and he started bobbing his head at me for some reason. So I let the Roach climb out the rope with him... It climbed up his leg and onto his side and pissed him off... He hissed at it so I plucked it off of him... I swear he came towards my hand as I plucked it off and pursued it as I pulled it away...as soon as i opened my hand a little he grabbed that thing and chomped it down!!! Rock On! I think he wanted to eat it cause it pissed him off and he discovered how tasty they are... I put a couple more in his feeding cup and sure enough... he ate 2 more in less than 10 mins.

Now I just have to get her to eat them... I'm sure she will follow suit... I fed her some gut loaded supers cause she just shed yesterday and I don't want her being hungry. I have a feeling she will catch on in the next couple days... I find they seem more interested when I get the dubias to play dead and expose the underside of their belly...

Thanks for the help guys... now time to get going on my silkies.

Consider using lobster roaches instead, they're very well accepted. Not all chameleons readily eat Blaptica and Blaberus. Silkworms are neat but that's a LOT of work.
