Veiled care vs Panther care

Hi...I have a veiled cham and a panther cham. I had read that their needs were the same, in regards to heat/humidity/enclosures. My boys are in identical cage setups, with an auto mister/raindome, a light hood with a UV 5.0 bulb, and grow light for the pothos and a 100watt incandescent for heat. My veiled is fine with all this...he cruises up to the top to bask, wanders around looking for bugs, etc. My panther is always curled up in his pothos. If I pick him up and put him on his top stick near the basking light, he will sit there. He does eat when I put his cup in front of him. But overall he seems very unhappy. Do panthers need different care?

thanks....

I'd say a panther could use a bit lower basking temp then a veiled, and maybe a little lower humidity, but not very different. Can your chameleons see each other? I'm wondering if your panther is uncomfortable about something he sees. Just a thought.

I think it's the veileds that might need lower humidity, not the other way around.

I would recommend filling out the "how to ask for help" form and posting pictures of the cham and his enclousure.

In my experience with both, it's the veileds that require less humidity and slightly higher basking temps.

Smidget is on the MistKing system, but Smeagol is not. He only gets misted once a day, and he gets a nice warm shower once a week.

They come from a dryer climate in Yemen.

Squee likes lots of water and humidity. First thing he does after being out on the free range all day is get a long drink of water.

So, I have my veileds at about 86F, and my panther about 5F cooler.

Thank you for saying what I mean to type...

Yes, although it sounded good when I was typing, I agree that slightly lower temp for panther, and slightly lower humidity for veiled. (It was a long day ) Although veiled chams do well in varied climates in their native ranges. Some may be in semi-arid conditions.

My Nosy Be is my first panther chameleon, and I find that he needs a lower temp for basking. His basking light has a dimmer, so I can adjust accordingly. He also loves water and enjoys a shower when the Mistking kicks on. My veiled acts like he's being sprayed with hot ashes when the water hits him. :)

While the care is similar and there might be some minor differences, each individual animal is different. Some panthers like basking temps a little higher and some veileds a little lower. Some like more water, some seem to do best with less. I remember a keeper who had this one particular veiled that just would not thrive without temps up to 105 degrees. They were obviously very careful and made sure the likelihood of burns was minimized as much as possible, but the animal just needed a higher basking spot than was recommended. (Don't do this obviously, as it is unlikely to be what your panther needs.)

Filling out the how to ask for help form will help. Keep in mind though, if your conditions are basically what everyone says is correct, that you may still need to make very minor adjustments gradually to see if the individual animal just needs something a little different.
