veileds...

Is it really rare to have a friendly veiled Cham? I have a baby veiled and he is only about a month old. He is so timid and even me putting food in his cage makes him retreat to the leaves in his cage where he is 'hidden'. I was hoping to find some ways to ensure he becomes a bit more comfortable and welcoming to me before it is too late. help?
:(

everyone says it is. And at the same time a lot of people say theirs is nice. Mice was skittish at first but let me handle him with ease and now he is a huge jerk. hasnt bitten me but only because i am faster than him. the panthers i hear are pretty friendly and way more colorful. although, way more expensive too lol.

Just continue feeding him and putting your hand in there to clean. Don't grab him, that'll just stress him out. As they grow older they'll slowly gain trust. Try hand feeding also, that helps your Cham bond to you. It just takes lots and lots of time and patience. Even an aggressive Cham can be tamed if you work with him slowly. I proved that to myself with mine lol

Not all can be "tamed". Some are nice and some aren't. It is just like with any animal. Just don't give up on it or you will never have a chance of handling him. You have not had him long. It takes time. Both my panthers are nice. One is nicer than the other

i have three vieleds two are two months old and one is around 6 and there the sweetest things ever and since i got them havent shown any aggression i think it just has to do with there personality personally not the bread itself.

I've known my chameleon since he was just a wee little guy, now he is almost a year. When he was young he was really chill, then around 4-6 months he was a complete jerk and hated everyone, then once I bought him from the petstore I work at he slowly gained trust now I open his cage and if wants to come out he will. If not he will let you know... chameleon owners you know what im talking about! I think time patients will be your best friend over the next several months.

how ever I've heard not sure the truth behind it but panthers are generally more tame, where as veileds are known for being more growchy.

that is so true you really have to work with them no matter what age, it took a while but my meller completely trusts me and we have a great bond.

Welcome to the forums. Chameleons especial veileds can and offer do become very cage aggressive. I free range all my chameleons, they have the whole free range of my entire house if they wish. I interact with them on a daily basis and never have the problems that I read about on here. My veileds are some of my sweetest chams and show the best personalities of all. I have a blog for new keepers attached below. I hope you fine it helpful in keeping your little one healthy.

Also here's a video of my little man Luie coming down out of his free range to take a stroll around the house. As you can see they get allot more exercise when free ranged.

I have had 3 Veileds inthe past - all 3 of them were wonderful and friendly. They were also caged as I have cats, but they had several plants in their cages and lots of walkways. I always felt mine wre better kept this way than just having a single tree to free range on - each had 3 plants and lots of vines, stick, etc so they could get a good variety of perch sizes and temperatures should they require.

Chameleons, like humans, are all different in personality! My friend has a male that often tries to bite her but he is fine with me and will happily sit in the sun on my hand. :D Even my poor old boy Tommy was such a sweet boy, despite being passed through several homes before I gave him a permanent forever home.

My last female would happily come out of her cage some days, but others she was qute happy to stay put - I respected that and handling was always on their terms. Hand feeding is also a very good tool to help them learn to associate you with good things - eventually this may also mean being taken outside for some sunshine or free range time in a safe place. My girl was also very wary of me to start with and even ran off my hand once. You need to have a lot of patience and let them do things in their own time.

My boy goes through phases. He'll go weeks where he's placid and gentle and tolerates handling well. Other weeks, he hisses and tries to bite me if my hand goes near him. I noticed he's particularly grumpy when shedding. I guess he's entitled to his mood swings lol

Thanks for all the advice! I just dont know when my little guy will be big enough to come out of the cage happily. Ill be patient and see what personality my little guy comes out with!
