want to breed silkworms? newbs look here

wow talk about a looooong read.

It was good though, made me realize i do not ever want to breed silkies, ill just shell out the extra money to buy them lol

yeah, I too find silkworms a pain in the rear just to raise them.

I do it because my chams love them, but still all that poop and then making sure any mold don't grow (or gets cleaned up real fast) is just a royal pain.

I did buy too many this time because I had to, so I'm gona try to get some to cacoon and hopfuly turn into moths just to feed them off to my male.
but I still think they are a pain to raise up from just "smalls" or 1/4"...I don't even want to think about raising them from eggs.

Wow what a neat site!! I have about 275 silkworm eggs ready to hatch any day, I now know what I am in store for

OMG, you better laugh like there is no tomorrow, because you're gona be one busy person once they start hatching...that's for sure.

I know that now lol!!! They actually started hatching today after reading this I may just feed them off to Ernie when they are big enough and not breed them!

I only have a handful of eggs, so I'm still gonna give it a go (my leopard gecko really likes silk moths, and several went down his gullet before I remembered to let a few live long enough to breed). ~30 eggs shouldn't be so bad?

YEAH! My easly solution is to just get them from the 7 year old kids that breed them at schools!
Lol silkworms are so easy, just give them leaves or chow, then let the moths lay eggs wherever except for on cacoons and then put egs in fridge for about 2 months then take them out, wait for hatchlings and start the cycle all over again.

The only reason why some of mine would die is because I forget to feed them, but I have plenty so its ok.

even just saving about 10 or 20 of that masive amount to cacoon will be more then enough to try breeding.
I'm going to be trying the same because I have way too many that I'll need.

yet I still say they are not easy to raise up or keep. at least not like superworms, crickets, dubeas, and many other feeders.
I find that all that poop, silk that strangles/kills smaller ones, mold, and constant cleaning and feeding makes it alot of work for the beginer or the person who doesn't have that much time on their hands.
