Wanting to buy superworms.. breeding question too

I'd like to have another type of bug to feed my chameleon while I wait for the snails and dubia roaches to multiple.. I'd also like to breed superworms..

Would it be best to just buy a bunch at a petco or petsmart? or cheaper to buy them online? Can someone recommend a online site to me if online is better.

I'd also like to know.. when breeding superworms, do they need warmth for the eggs to hatch? and do I need to lay anything special down for them to lay their eggs on?

Right now I have 7 mealworms that turned into beetles and I'm hoping to see some baby mealworms but have no clue about how warm they are suppose to be or if they need a damp spot to lay eggs or what. I'd like to do the same thing with superworms. :D

I hope to eventually get into breeding other bugs but the others I've read about seem to be a lot of work! :eek:
I'll be happy to hear suggestions of other feeders I could multiple and keep for my chameleon.

Right now I have ..
Land snails
Dubia roaches
Crickets
 
As long as there room temp ( if you don't keep your house cold ) you should be fine. You can but them on top of your fridge or under a stand that might have reptiles on them.

I live in a basement, and have mine under my tv stand with a heat coil in there. It works well for me. Suppers are harder to breed then mealies. As for were its cheaper to buy them. You might find on line is cheaper.

You can buy a box online or at a reptile show. Supers will live about 1 year if not fed off, that's their natural lifespan. However, if you buy a box of 500 you can have about an unlimited supply if you breed them yourself.

You'll need a set of plastic boxes - I use a set from Walmart, the plastic drawers that you see for dorm rooms, etc. You'll also need a small plastic container with dividers. I've heard of a fishing tackle box used, and I use a thread divider from a crafts store. Finally, you'll need oatmeal, and some gut load, and you are set to go.

When you receive all those superworms, separate out the largest ones, and place them 1 per divided section into that container - this will stress them out and they will turn into aliens. The rest of the worms can be placed into the oatmeal bedding with some gutload (put it in dishes so that the oatmeal doesn't become damp and mold). I also have a dish of water crystals to make sure they have enough moisture.

Once you have aliens, remove them into another container with nothing it in. You can then place more worms into those divided containers to grow more aliens. They will turn into beetles and at that point you move them into yet another container in your shelf of drawers to breed and lay eggs. Once you see the bedding wriggling, remove the beetles, and let that bedding of babies grow up. Place the beetles in another container to continue to breed. Superworm beetles will eat the aliens, so it's important to remove them right away, and they will also eat the baby worms.

Raising superworms is really easy - I keep mine at room temp, and they seem to do just fine. Since I've started raising them I've only bought a box or 2 to replenish if I got too low on beetles for production, or something like that. Good luck!

Question. How big does the container have to be (the one with the 3 drawers) for 500 total superworms? Do I have to get the larger one that is bigger than my hand? or can I get the mini one? Would this be too small?

Also.. I purchased "small" size superworms since my chameleon isn't that big.. can you turn a smaller superworm into a "alien" or beetle? Or do they have to get a certain size?
