Weird thing on mouth...

i have a 4ish month old female veild chameleon and today when I got home she had this weird thing on/ in her mouth. I’m not sure if it’s her tongue or if she bit off more than she can chew or something... Any ideas? I'm starting to get worried about her.

If it's mouth rot it will likely need a vet to clean it out and put it on an antibiotic to get rid of it. Can you get a photo of her with her mouth open so we can see it better?

I'm not sure. She's very shy when it comes to eating and I've never actually seen her hunting before. I've only ever seen her mouth open from hissing or yawning. Is there a way I can force her to open her mouth without it hurting her so I can see what's really happening?

After doing some research, I don't think its quite mouth rot. Its not pusing or inflaming its just something there... but I'm not sure what it is or how to get rid of it. Help!

Can you get a picture without it being in shadow? It almost looks like a swelling, but it is hard to be sure.

Ii don't want you to force the mouth open just to get a photo in case you hurt the chameleon in the process...but without seeing the area properly I can't tell you what's going on.

Nip it in the bud and find a way to open her mouth to take a photo, and let an experienced keeper give you advise. It may save you and her a lot of trouble in the future.

Most chameleons don't like smart phones, maybe try using yours to get her to open her mouth in a defensive gesture, then take a quick picture..? It's possible she could have injured herself or something while eating a cricket or whatever you are feeding her too.

She is in an awful mood today. I'm working on the picture. Hopefully I can get a good one tonight. It's not really going down at all. What are the side effects of mouth rot and how crucial is it that I take her to the vet if she does end up having it?

I'm not sure. She has fallen before... maybe that it???

Can it be caused by her food being too big? I'm really struggling here.

If it's mouth rot and isn't treated then it will only get worse and she will die before too long. Their pus is like cottage cheese in texture and the bacteria is usually pseudamonas aeruginosa. Some people can even recognize it by the smell but a culture and sensitivity test will tell you for sure what it is ...and then the chameleon should be put on the appropriate medication. Make sure you keep her well hydrated while on the meds because they are almost all hard on their kidneys.

Pseudamonas is an opportunist found many places in the environment.
Good luck!
