He lives in my back yard and I see him out there allot. He's black, does that mean he's a black snake? What kind of food would he eat?

Its either a Southern Black Racer, Coluber constrictor priapus, or an Everglades Racer, Coluber constrictor paludicola. They eat a lot of different things including lizards, frogs, other snakes, small rodents, insects, etc.

Thanks Chris!!!!! I had thought about trying to feed him something but we have TONS of the little Anoles in our yard.....maybe that's why he likes living here. :)

What a cool little snake, and harmless too! Your lucky to share your enviroment with such wildlife Jann. Im so glad your open minded about snakes, and 'shoot' only with a camera.
:)

Very nice!!!! He is beautiful!!!! I just had to catch and relocate a snake today that was in my neighbors wood pile. Actually 2 of them but the other slithered under the trailer before I could get it. They were going to kill them but I told them I would take care of it for them. Just cant see a reason to destroy a harmless snake. Im not sure if they are black rat snakes or Norther Black Racers. Will try and get a pic when I get the other one out.

He is cute and we so enjoy watching him when we sit outside with the chams. At first I was afraid Red, my dog would hurt him but after the first few times of telling Red to be a good boy he leaves him alone. He's been living in our backyard for about two years now. We just never knew what kind he was or what to feed him.

We also have beaufiful Sandhill Cranes. I feed them worms and crickets all the time. They will come in the garage and eat from my hand. I'll have to get some pics of them. I'll check the puter......might have a few there.

Jo, we don't hurt any of the animals around our house. ;)

Sandhill crane pic

I found a pic in my phone. They are beautiful and almost as tall as me. I'll get some better pics of them soon.

Yeah the Sandhills have no fear and sometimes that's not a good thing. They are very cool birds though :D

What about Aussie Squatters who set up tents in your yard to see space shuttle fly-by's, racers in the grass and cranes wandering around? :D

You do have a Bar-B-Q right? :D

Serious question Jann, Is your home near natural land? everglades or something?
I dont think some folks appreciate the beauty of wildlife sharing our habitation. (not you),
Your quite fortunate. Have you ever tried to fully list/photograph the variety of wildlife near you? I wonder what else lives there? :)

around my house I commonly see alot of species, mostly non-native however.

Cuban Anoles (these guys know me se well they eat from my hands!)
Brown (carribean) anoles
Ibis, stork, and various cranes/herons
Iguanas (my favorite)
and various species of turtles, even some snappers
Ive only seen 3 snakes, one was a ringneck, the other two were moccasins (cottonmouth).

I also see an Oustalet's Chameleon out there, just about every day, he thinks he rules the yard, he also expects me to feed and water him, wonder what his deal is  :p

Jo; Our neighborhood backs up to the Savannas Wildlife Reserves. We have a vacant overgrown lot next door and a hugh vacant over grown lot across the street and we see all kinds of wildlife. Just to name a few:

Iguanas
anoles
snakes
frogs
turtles
armadillos
raccoons
opossums
squirrels
rabbits
rats
wild boars that dig in your yard
all kinds of cranes and birds

Two young armadillos were playing in the front yard one morning.....they were so cute. The sad part about having all these animals around, we have a pool out back and with a wood privacy fence but some how the animals still get in and every once in awhile we'll find a dead one in the pool. Once they get in most of them can't get out. Sometimes we are able to pull them out before it's too late but sometime when we get up in the morning something has drown over night.
