I am a new chameleon keeper, I just got my first terrarium set up and I'm ready to purchase my first chameleon. My dream is to have a blue bar ambilobe but I do no want to risk putting screwing up with one. So what type should I go with? What chameleon is the hardiest? I know veiled are up there but how hardy are carpets? Or should I just go big with the blue bar?

Veileds and panthers are the known hardiest or "beginner Cham" .... Both have much similar care but the panthers are way more expensive:p
It's recommended to get a male veiled, then try your bb panther...also females are sort of hard in any species of Cham for egg laying... They don't need to mate to get eggs , the eggs just don't hatch

I started with a male ambilobe and it was not too difficult once I figured out the lighting, basking spot temp and keeping him hydrated well. For a male panther or veiled, keep in mind that they will require a 24x24x48 enclosure or larger. Takes up a bit of space but they are pretty awesome. Let me know if you need any help getting your setup completed.

I have a panther chameleon and am planning on a getting a female next weekend. I have kept a lot of animals and will say that they don't seem much more difficult then the other exotics I have kept, do your research up front to determine their requirements, and make sure they are met, and if your lazy like me then save up your penny's to buy an automated mister. I will say that they are FAR less tolerant of "less then ideal" parameters, but overall not hard. If it was me, I would get what you like, as long as you do your research you can be successful at any of them.

Veileds and Panthers are super similar in care. I say go for the one you want the most. There's no reason you'll find either of them difficult as long as you do your reasearch :)
