I am just guessing, you can google to check. The rose of china is more tropical with shiny leaves and usually grown as potted plants where the rose of sharon has matt leaves and is usually grown as a shrub or even hedge.
http://www.flchams.com/safe_plant_list.asp#b this is a good site with all the different types of plants.
