TITLE SAYS IT ALL!
I've checked petsmart,petco,petland,atlantis...petland tried to sell me waxworms as silkies! Do bigger cities like Indianapolis and St.Louis carry more bugs???

best

The best thing you can do for yourself is start buying bulk insects. I highly recommend roaches as a feeder i can name a few that i've had wonderful success with: madagascar hissers, discoid (false deaths head), turkistan, or six spotted roaches.

Alot of people have reservations about keeping roaches at their house, but i've been doing it for a while and i've never had any problems with it whatsoever. It's worth it because they don't smell bad like crickets can, theyre very cheap to feed (and i mean VERY cheap), and they reproduce enough that you can have multiple sizes of feeders for your cham or other reptile.

Thank you, i was just ordering some bulks of phoneix, horn, super and silk worms and i was hesitant about the roaches. Are they as good as the others? I dont have a problem with keeping more bugs...whats one more containerfull? My brother was at my apartment the other day and said that if i died in my apartment that i would look like a sick human being because of all the bugs i have!

Should i get the "bulberous discoid" or "blaptica dubia"? the blaptica dubia are 20 for 15$ and the bulberous are 10 for 15$

roaches

It depends on the roach. Turkistan roaches (B. laterallis) have the highest meat to shell ratio of pretty much any feeder insect. Any roach is good tho. I feed my roaches a diet of cat food (because of the high protein), apples, oranges, carrots, yellow bell peppers, sweet potatoe, kiwi, and romaine lettuce. So just think about how good roaches can be for you cham!!! All of those nutrients will transfer to your molly! If you were interested I can hook you up with roaches for very cheap. I breed five different species...

Yay!
Another roach boy!
That's good .... you'll have opportunities to sell on this forum.
Blatta lateralis have been determined to be a pest species ... I've had them and personally wouldn't keep them again. Dr. Matthew took them off my hands for me ...hope that's working out for him:rolleyes:. Blaptica dubia are my absolute favorite roach. And yes, roaches are as good or better than "the others". I highly recommend them as an easy to care for, sustainable feeder.

Careful though...they become like pets, and then it's hard to feed them off:)

turkistans

Haha glad you share an interest in the roaches. I've never had any problems with the turkistans personally. My beardies and chams gobble them up lightning fast. You're the first person i've seen that had anything bad to say about them! Dubias are cool, but i like hissers and the six spotted roaches better!

Love hissers...but not as a feeder for chameleons.
Turks are a great feeder, but you can have problems with them if any escape.
Plus they really creeped me out:eek:
They look way to much like an american, oriental, german .... take over your kitchen roach to me.

roaches

I can respect that POV. I've been keeping them a very long time and have had no problems. As for the hissers my beardies and chams go nuts for them. They do have a harder shell tho..

I have a buddy who had a tank of them get turned over while out to work and he had to BIG problem with them in his home. It was an older home with lots of places to hide, but it took him several months to get them all gone. Going to his home and seeing a "food" roach live and breed outside the tank with no issue has X'd them from my keeping list.

My Roaches........

I have a large colony of Eublaberus Distanti and a smaller one of E. Prosticus. They can't climb out of a two inch bowl. They are great roaches but mature slowly. It took me three years to get a decent colony going so I could feed them out. I have a hard time doing it though. I really like them. They are so clean and do not smell at all. Can't climb and I've never had one escape. I keep them in the house in one of my chameleon rooms. They come to the front of the glass tank when they seem me come with a plate of veggies/fruit for them. Almost nothing to maintain compared to nasty crickets.

be careful

You know what, it just depends on the person. If you have your roaches in a safe place then you won't have to worry about them being knocked over or any escapees. Like i said, i've never had any problems whatsoever nor do alot of my friends. Just keep the enclosures away from dogs (who may potentially knocked them over) and buy sterilite containers to keep the roaches in so even if you knock the tub over more than likely none with escape. With the turkistans i have 99% females and only a handful of males. When i take them to the petstores to sell they ask about what the chances are for an infestation and i say none because i sell the stores only juvenile females.

I wouldnt mind it, the movies make it look pretty cool!

they dont bite thou...right?

I'm another roach guy. I keep colonies of Blatta Lateralis and Blaptica Dubia. I don't bother with crickets anymore except for my small chams. I'll only keep 1/8 and 1/4 crickets. After that, they stink and start dying off.

Hey Brad,

I ended out feeding them off quickly and sticking with the dubia. The turkistan required too much humidity form me to want to deal with. Food rotted too quickly in the cage. Maybe I was doing it wrong, but those roaches required more care than I wanted to give them.

I also didn't want something that grew so fast, so my colonies weren't always exploding in number. I just stick with the dubia and sell off every now and then.

Hey! The good Dr is in… The last batch I got from you is doing great, I have lots and lots of roaches dubia now! I need to get them into a larger tub so they have more room to roam. I have also picked up some hissing roaches and boy howdy them things breed like there is no tomorrow! I started out with a dozen or so but now every time I walk around the food rack all I hear is hissssssss and the egg flats begin to move with dozens of hissing roaches running to hide. Haha :)

I have blaptica Dubia they are GREAT! they don't stink, climb, Easy to breed, and so much better than crickets. I recommend these to anyone who wants a good feeder and one that is better than crickets.

hey, if i open the lid where i kept dubia, will the roach start fly out?
How can you avoid making them fly?
I will use tongs to touch.
I m not that comfy yet handling these bugs with my bare hands.
