Who is eating pork and sauerkraut?

I am 100% Pennsylvania-Dutch and our tradition is to eat pork, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes on New Year's Day for a prosperous new year. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. And I'm not talking about the sauerkraut you can buy in a store, this is the real deal- the stuff made by the old coal-miners, fermented for months to perfection.

You either love it or hate it....who else will be loving it on Jan 1, 2013?

that takes me back, yum!
originally from erie pa. sure do remember that meal...
even though we are all italians :p

I am not sure if the scotch/Irish version is different but we always had pork roast, cornbread and blackeyed peas. I have come to appreciate that tradition now but was never thrilled with the peas as a kid. Parents came from Tennessee so may have been altered in the south

Collards, fried pork chops, black eyed peas, cornbread and potatoes will be on our table New Year's Day along with a few good friends :). I will be 42 this coming year and i Haven't had a year without them yet

We just bought our osso bucco and cornmeal for creamy polenta today! Having a quiet dinner with the hubby, parents (visiting), and our roommate, and lots of wine! Happy New Year everyone!!! :D

New Years doesn't have any particular food associated with it in Britain as far as I know..........any alcohol will do nicely though.....Happy New Year everyone! :)
P.s. Chinese takeaway for me tonight.

I had to settle for a pork shoulder this year since i waited til the last minute. Few hours on low heat should make it tender. Happy new year everyone!

My background is Pennsylvania Dutch as well but I was born in Waterloo County, Ontario. That area has a large P-Dutch population from the original immigrants from PA as well as the Mennonite Germans. Some of my older relatives speak the P-Dutch language which is something I never learned. Anyways Spaetzle was made earlier today and just needs to be fried up and the pork roast is in the oven. There’s going to be some good eatin’ in here in about an hour. Yum.

The only things I’m missing are some Cook Cheese (Koch Kaese) and a nice summer sausage. I take any and all donations of those. :D

We ate about 2:00 EST and I am so full I could only manage to eat half an ice cream pie tonight that my neighbors brought over :D. So any pounds put on today was their fault!

Lol my "people" speak that language. My grandma and her brothers are all very hard to understand. All the men from my mom's side of the family were PA Dutch coal miners, they are something else. They still make moonshine if you can believe that. Family reunions make me pretty certain I was switched at birth:eek:
