Why does my new chameleon keep turning black?

I just got my chameleon (Olive) 5 days ago. The first day she was in her cage,(which is three feet high and about a foot-and-a-half wide,) for a few hours until i took her out and all this time she was green and seemed happy crawling up my hair and sitting on my head. she has a big leafy plant in there and a vine and another fake leafy plant which she hangs out in at the top. She has a UVB light and a 100w heat lamp. I generously mist her cage and everything in it with warm water at least 5 times a day and she is eating fine(crickets) and I put the calcium on them yesterday as well. Ever since I put her back in her cage after holding her the first day she just seems angry and stressed when she sees me.

Just let her get settled in, a bit. It's best to let them settle in nicely for like a week, up to probably a month, before you really start trying to handle them a ton...

Welcome to the forums!

I am by no means an expert but I do read the forums quite excessively so hopefully my two cents will help out. Anyway since you only got her 5 days ago she may still be getting used to her new environment and you. But there may be other factors adding to the stress like maybe she doesn't have enough coverage in her enclosure to feel comfortable, or you haven't really given her time to settle in with handling her lots or just generally being there a bunch.

If you could post pictures of the enclosure and be a bit more detailed as to the temps , handling etc. we may be able to give you a more detailed answer. She should start relaxing after awhile though! Good luck, hope this helps.

Our female did the exact same thing when we first got her. She crawled all over us the first day but as soon as we put her away for the night thats where she stayed for about 2 weeks. She would hiss and turn cold black if we attempted to stick our hands or arms anywhere near her. Just let her settle in. We have had Camille for about 7 months. Now when we open the cage she comes crawling right out to us. Hand feeding helped big time.
