They will sleep in all kinds of weird spots.

My question would be why do you have lights and electrical wires inside the cage! That is scary! Burns!

the wiring

they wont get burnt, i'm sorta house bound, and am constantly in the same room, every move they make i can see what there doing. they dont usually have access to the wiring anyway, but she only gets up there when everythink is off.

Still, it isn't safe to have all of the electrical stuff there. It can burn it.

How do you keep the water from hitting the bulbs-those things will explode and shatter????

I have to admit that i have lights inside the enclosure but they are coming out next week!
The guy in the shop i got him from said it was fine to set up this way but im always worried about water hitting the bulb but again he said it would be ok!
I have found too that my cham had a habit of climbing up the thermostat sensor and laying against the UV bulb but i have moved that now and he cant climb up it anymore so sits closeby on top of a plant.
Will i need a stonger bulb than the reptisun 5.0 if its on the outside of a flexarium or will the uv rays penetrate it ok??

I usually use 10.0's on Reptariums, but I also use 5.0's on them and all seems to be fine.

I just don't see how you would possibly keep the chams off of those spot/flood type bulbs. You have to leave sometimes even if just for a few moments. That would cause a catostrophic burn. And just a little water will explode those bulbs. Why risk it. They work fine on the outside.

I agree and although the spot bulb is quite out of the way from him to get to i dont think it would be a prob for him to get to if he wanted to! That was my point to the guy in the shop... I'm going to move it outside tomorrow!

Is it ok for the bulb to be very close to the mesh or would it burn the material?

I use 100W bulbs 2" from the Reptarium material with no issues at all.

all I can say is:

MOVE THOSE LAMPS FROM THE CAGE!!! They should be on the outside. I don't care who or what or why someone said it was ok to place them inside. I don't care how careful you are with misting..... Just please remove those lamps from her cage.

Oh and about her sleeping like that. Don't worry about it, be more concerned with the lamps inside the cage!!!!!

i read somewhere that if they hang upside down in the cage like that its because its to cold and they wait for the light to come on in the morning to warm up

dunno if thats ur issue but its worht a try

Now the key word here is 'they'. So is it safe to assume you have more than one in a single cage? If that is the case then that could be the reason why she is sleeping at the very top. Trying to get as far as she can away from the other chameleon(s). That can be very stressful.

Accidents do happen and this is one that is just screaming only bad things can come from it. A dome fixture can be had for less than $10 vs. a few $100 in vet bills. Not only having a proper light fixture will help with the safety of your chameleon, it will also be more efficient in radiating the heat around the cage.

...and don't ever listen to 'the guy at the pet store' unless he/she has a few years of successful caring for reptiles, and chameleons in particular! Don't even get me started ranting about pet store employees!!

Ya,it cant be too hard to take the lights out,its easier to take them out then to have to deal with a burnt chameleon.

Taken the bulbs out now guys and not only does the enclosure look better but i feel a lot more relaxed too!!!
Has made no difference in the temps either and if anything its raised them slightly as the bulb is facing straight down rather than at an angle like before..

Do you have more than one chameleon living in that cage?
