After an hour of just holding my hand under him in his cage, and holding food I actually got my Cham to willingly climb onto my hand! Few hisses but nothing serious. So it seems u really do need patients and to just persist with them 
he's now sat in a plant in the window ( although it's dark) nice n green. thsnks for advice!!
