I am new to chemeleons but I am learning a ton on this great site I just bought a fountain for my screen cage and I heard from some people that thay are not good to use I really use it for humitity and decoration does anybody else use one thanks

Aside from harbouring bacteria, your chameleon proably won't drink from it - it would most likely get pooped in and feeders will drown in it, plus they are very difficult to keep clean. Chams don't recognise still water as a drinking source either - droplets from the leaves and the dripper will attract their attention and stimulate them to drink. The best way to hydrate a chameleon is to provide them with a dripper as well as misting the cage 2 or 3 times per day. Live plants also help with humidity levels.

Many lizards will poop in a water dish. I'm constantly having to clean out water dishes because it's their instinct to poop in the water. It decays quicker (more organisms living in the water), and it also gets swept away from currents.

That, or they will find a designated place to poop, I find that it is close to where they eat. The instinct for this is because their poop attracts insects for them to eat.

Chameleons will benefit much more from a misting system set on a timer, you can set it to go on for 10-30 seconds, 5-10 times a day. It depends how your cage is set up for drainage, or if you are using a paper towel or carpet on the bottom to absorb the water that you can pull out and wash once in a while.

It's also important to let the cage dry out between mistings, so humidity doesn't get too high which can lead to a respiratory infection. Not too dry, just as long as it isn't constantly 'wet'.

Some reptiles that would use the fountain would be day geckos or a corn snake or something similar to those.

With some fountains small chameleons can also drown in them. They are very poor swimmers. I recommend spraying the cage for 2-10 minutes 2-4 times a day with a dripper running for at least two hours a day.

It really depends on what type of cham he has. Veileds don't require as much humidity as a panther, for instance. Spraying for 2-10 minutes is way too much and will not dry out, especially if you do this 2-4 times a day. Misting twice a day for up to 1 minute should be good and using real plants helps humidity levels. Waterfalls are not safe for cham use as it has been said. Your dripper should run all day. If you need ideals on how to make one, let me know, it's simple.

I would really like to learn how to make a dripper.

Need a plastic gallon milk carton, 1/4" valve and hose (I bought mine at Home Depot - the ones used for ice makers) to me the hose is sturdier and the valve is easy to turn. Poke a small hole on the side - at the bottom of the milk carton (you want it smaller than the tubing) and insert a piece of tubing about 6" long inside the carton and connect the valve to the end of that piece and another piece of tubing to the other end of the valve. There you have it. I fill my up half way and let it drip about a drop a second and it last all day. The other part of this, is that you need a place to collect the drops on the bottom of the enclosure. I can post pictures of mine after work today.

Here are the pictures of my dripper set up.

Some chameleons won't drink unless sprayed for at least five minutes. My cage dries out just fine when I spray for five minutes two or three times a day. I hardly ever have to spray that long because my humidity is usually pretty good, but still, it's do-able.

I enjoy that dripper system quite a bit!

and I agree with you Pssh I mainly see my Xeno drink when I spray.

That, or they will find a designated place to poop, I find that it is close to where they eat. The instinct for this is because their poop attracts insects for them to eat.

It also attracts predators. Most lizards are smarter than that and very few remain for long in one place. Some specifically dig lone chambers for defecation, well AWAY from the main burrow. :)

Misting Chameleons

When I mist my Veil Chameleon (Jake), he gets to the top of the cage and opens his mouth so the water coming out of my mister goes right in his mouth, he will sit there for about 10 minutes while I mist him and let the water run in his mouth and all over him, he likes it. I also have a dripper
