I've lost a baby veiled from an intestinal blockage due to accidentally eating substrate. I'm sorry if it comes across harsh, but it's a very serious matter that's important for your cham's well being.
I've been experiementing with feeding my crix the leftovers from my own smoothies i make in the morning. I think the last concoction had soy milk, pinapple, mango, and strawberry. They absoloutely loved it and every cricket in the cage was eating it within about 10 seconds! My cham more than...
Get rid of that compact lamp quick and get one of the longer tube lamps. The compact lamps can lead to UV burns and eye problems (even death!) Bad news all around. Also, make sure you're not over-vitamining her. There are some resources you can find in the feeding section to explain how to best...
So I live in a basement apartment. My Chams cage is in a corner by the window which he can see out of when I open the blinds. In fact, since I've been leaving the window open more often I find him just staring off into the front lawn pretty frequently. The problem is that the front lawn sits...
Interesting read. I wonder if there's a safe way to diffuse the light before it hits the Cham. Perhaps I should just slather him with SPF50.
It's very odd that they would release a product that is unsafe for reptiles. I see them in pet stores which makes me rather worried. The average new...
As my girlfriend prepares to leave for Korea to teach English for a year, I'm seriously considering picking up a second Cham. I figured I'd do my reaseach online first before I commit to such an endeavor. This is very preliminary, so I figured I'd ask all the important questions first before I...
I find this very interesting. Certain species in the wild have adapted over the course of many generations to expect poor feeding conditions. Making them well fed might not be the same as making them healthy. As with everything to do with health, too much can be just as dangerous as too little...
When I brought my veiled outside and it was too hot he made a break for it and tried running away (seriously! he's feisty!) and only stopped when he got to shade of my shadow.
Thanks for the response! The ficus has been kicking fine for a few months now, that's not the issue :) The problem is that the cover is predominantly at the top of the cage and not near the bottom. When my Cham has to move around to cool off or hunt he loses 90% of his cover and i'm sure feels...
Thanks for the input Brad, I agree 100%. I'll admit that I like to be able to handle my Cham, but much more importantly the ability to get him out of his enclosure in an emergency is my topmost priority.
And as always, catching him against his will is something I just outright refuse to do...
Alright. So i've increased the frequency of misting over the past few days and I noticed my Cham coughed last night.
Is this a sign of a respitory infection? I hear they are caused by having an enclosure that is too humid or cold. Now I'm reluctant to spray him as much as he needs.
When taking my Veiled outside where he can get really hidden between plants it leads me to believe that perhaps I'm not providing enough cover for him in his enclosure. I have a Ficus and a Pothos in his cage.
The leaves on the Ficus are clustered near the top don't provide him much cover...
I'm still eagerly awaiting this re-socializing "how-to". I've been trying the method of putting my hand in his cage (but not close enough for him to start getting stressed) so he gets re-introduced to my presence.
I also have to pick up some food tomorrow so I'm going to play with hand...
I actually don't see much research or discussion on wild chameleons and how they fare. What types of plants and insects do they eat in the wild? Although plants we may use for them in enclosures might be safe, it's probably better that we mimic their natural habitat as much as possible. This...
