So sorry for your loss.
It sounds like you've done everything you can to give her the best chance, but I'd suggest adding a low-D3 calcium to your supplement schedule if you get another just to be sure those needs are met. What % UV is your tube? I've used a 12% Arcadia D3+ T5 for female veilds...
Agreed, it's a great space filler. I prefer 100% live planted enclosures, but that's by no means a necessity. Looks like your little guy has a great home :)
If you wanted to add more climbing opportunities, willow garden trellis is an excellent option if you can find it.
My old girl (excuse the image quality, this was 7 years ago )
She lived to be 8 years and 9 months old, such a sweetheart.
Not to pick favourites but she was always my favourite. Don't tell the others.
Great questions! Anything we find that can help captive breeding would be amazing. And thank you! We're very excited, September can't come soon enough :)
So we've just received confirmation of funding for our Trioceros research trip to Kenya! For those unaware, I'm a research (and soon to be field) herpetologist from the UK currently studying Trioceros species. We're looking to leave in September this year, which is towards the end of the...
Glad to hear there are more longer-lived females out there, my old girl lived to be 8 years and 9 months old before passing despite the '4-6 year' average lifespan a lot of (albeit unreliable) sources say.
Don't mean to hijack this thread but I've been running a business selling bioactive enclosures and kits for 2 years (and have 5 bio setups currently) so I'd be happy to help, it's way easier than you'd think ;)
I've only ever used screen cages (ReptiBreeze and my own builds), both for my own animals and those at the University. I typically cover the back and half of each side with a clear shower curtain or corex (corrugated plastic), which is mainly to stop water from soaking the wall behind and to...
I completely agree, this seems to be the key factor in all successful chameleon keeping regardless of method. It's a careful balance between habitat recreation and practicality, with (in my opinion) too many people falling on the side of practicality. A little piece of my soul dies when I see...
Gotta agree with you there, I've had some interesting conversations with several 'herpetologists' online; one even tried to tell me that Varanus (the focus of most of my MSc) were ovoviviparous...
I also was unaware this was a topic of debate and I'll definitely be looking in to it some more...
By common knowledge, I mean common knowledge among experienced keepers and my colleagues (I'm a research herpetologist). It's also worth mentioning the gradient of humidity within a relatively small area (higher ambient humidity lower to the ground and within trees/shrubs) so wild F. pardalis...
Hi!
As @GoodKarma19 said, chameleons are dry shedders (which many keepers aren't aware of it seems?), and increasing humidity will only make shedding more difficult for them. In cases of stuck shed, 'shedding aid' can be used and has worked well for many keepers. I strongly suggest making the...
Definitely time for a vet visit.
She looks severely dehydrated so getting her to drink is the top priority. I'd strongly suggest adjusting your supplementation, heating and humidity as @Thehippie said, it seems you've been given some poor advice. I hope she recovers, keep us updated :)
Hi!
I don't think you have anything to worry about. It's definitely not a burn. Is the thermostat probe on his basking spot? If you've recently moved him to a larger enclosure it may be slightly colder since the ceramic bulb is higher up, and young panthers sometimes go darker when temps are a...
Thanks! I get the impression you're a Jackson's keeper? ;) I'm potentially heading to Kenya later in the year with a research group from Belgium to see these guys in the wild, so I'll be able to record some environmental and behavioural data on T. j. jacksonii and T. j. xantholophus if you're...
Everyone, meet Desmond.
He's a 3 month old T. jacksonii jacksonii and my first chameleon after 3 long years without owning any. I'll be posting updates as he grows, and showing y'all the enclosure I built and how I care for him if you're interested :)
