I would definitely try and inspect the Veiled Chameleon in person to see how he looks. His casque looks a bit oddly shaped to me from that photo. Keep in mind that if you get him, he could have health issues from improper care during his time with his previous owners.
The Jackson looks pretty...
Thanks for the information. I'm sorry to hear his sight is going, but he's still a beautiful boy. Hopefully with the hand feeding and watering he'll be comfortable.
Great info, and great questions cyberlocc.
Going into the future, what do you want to focus on? Refining current cages? Designing new ones?
I've been experimenting with a bioactive bottom to my Veiled Chameleon's cage since it sits on a utility sink; do you think you would design any deeper...
Haha, wolf spiders are actually pretty chill. I rescue a bunch from my cats all the time. I'm not certain, but I doubt the spider pictured is a wolf spider because of the skinny legs. I like IDing mystery animals though.
Here's a wolf spider from north Florida. One of my rescued-from-cats girls...
I know it can be hard to avoid attributing human reasoning, thoughts, and emotions to animals. Humans are wired to do this, but it really does a diservice to both yourself and the animal you might be taking care of.
For me, a lot of my enjoyment of having reptiles is learning how they think...
Like Andee said, the most popular species for feeding are from tropical areas and need a lot of warmth and humidity. I live in Florida and even my escapees don't last long inside.
I wasn't thrilled about mine when I first got them, but now I actually really enjoy caring for them. I always feel a bit bad when feeding the adults off to my Blue Tongue Skinks because the skinks take a long time to actually kill and eat them. They always have to thrash it around first and the...
They are, but it makes sense from a chameleon's point of view. They're used to nabbing fast moving, flying insects, so movement is what gets them going. I do wish he ate roaches more since my colony is exploding, lol.
Some chameleons don't take to roaches very well since they don't move constantly. My guy eats discoids here and there, but he doesn't jump after them like other feeders. He does love freshly molted ones when they're still white and squishy though.
Most of them honestly. It can be hard finding roaches especially, but we have a few that are legal. I have a colony of discoid roaches, which are similar to dubia, and eventually I want to get some green banana roaches. Both are legal here in Florida.
Diluting is probably a good idea. You want to keep him as hydrated as possible. I'd also say let him get some natural sun as much as you can. It's always going to be better for him than the bulbs, and might help stimulate his immune system.
For sure. We're also likely to have to move next year, so I can pick it up and take it with me.
Yeah those are definitely on the list. I was looking at some heavy duty U-shaped stakes used to help hold down trampolines.
I'm also working on an outdoor enclosure for my Veiled. He won't be out there 24/7 because of my worry about the hawks that live next to our backyard, but it'll be good for him to be outside during the days I can keep an eye on him.
I'm doing mine with a pvc frame and mesh.
Still waiting...
