Silkworms VS Moth: which is more nutritious?

It is true that most moths do not have mouths and those that do generally feed on nectar, in a way similar to butterflies. The primary function for a moth is procreation. Anyone who has seen the behavior of silkworm moths can attest to that. So it is impossible to gut load them to provide good...

    aquazamp

I have been away for awhile as well but I have an aquazamp and I love it. I have the raindome attachment and it is great. It was well worth the wait and I do believe I had heard rumors of health or personal issues. even with all I have read I would order from him again. It is top notch...

    A tribute to Loretta

So sorry to hear about all your losses over the past few weeks. I can't imagine how hard it must be for you. I know you have done the best for them from all the help you have offered others, including myself, when we have had sick animals. I hope your remaining animals bring you comfort.

    Microchipping Law in Malaysia

I agree with Chris, this is not cruel and may be intended to keep owners and breeders accountable for their pets and prevent them from being released into the wild should the owner decide keeping it is too much trouble. The microchip in my dog (and he weighs about 36K) would not be too big for...

    male Nosy Be panther chameleon

I never used supers for that very reason and they are not a good bug to use as a staple feeder. It is like feeding your kids McDonald's fries as an exclusive diet. You may just have to tough it out and resist feeding them to him. I would not give any food for a day then try with something...

Help! How to keep banded crickets in tub! And discoid question.

I have read that people who keep roaches that can climb put Vaseline around the inside of the bins and make it a couple inches wide. Vaseline would probably work better than mineral oil. I have never had a problem with crix escaping regardless of bin but I did use the translucent ones as well...

    Do burns heal?

As the others have said she does not look burned at all. The best way to treat a burn is to not let it happen. Attention to the cage is a big part of that. I had a male who got a pretty bad burn when he was able to pull down the screening from the top of his cage and crawled up and was...

    is heat at night bad?

Generally heat and light for 12 hours a day. Many folks keep their lights on the same schedule as natural sunlight. Unless your temps dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit no heat is needed at night and chameleons need total darkness to sleep. Even the red light from the special "heat" lamps will...

    is heat at night bad?

Reptile shops that are truly "experienced" in caring for chameleons. And a vet that relies on such advice is suspect in my book as well. It is possible that it is a supplement issue. Go to the health clinic forum. Locate the sticky at the top titled "how to ask for help". Open it and...

    From crickets to roaches advice?

I could never get my chams to be interested in dubias. I think it is mostly because of their lack of movement. Much like the T-Rex in Jurassic Park, if it doesn't move it is not food! They do tend to huddle together and avoid the notice of the chameleon. I am reluctant to just release them...

    DIY-Cricket Cup

I also had a magnet pull the backing off. It did take some paint off so I glued it back on with epoxy right to the plastic. Maybe you could glue the backing on first then paint over it with out affecting the magnetic attraction.

    DIY-Cricket Cup

I agree. I used very deep deli cups and McDonalds or Wendys largest drink cups and have always had some criks just jump straight up and out. I just take it as survival of the fittest. The strongest jumpers can escape and run off to do what crickets do.

    Pharaoh acting strange

I purchased my Veiled Chameleon from a breeder when he was quite young and initially he did not mind being handled. Then it seemed like overnight he transformed into a typical grumpy chameleon when he was about 6 months old. The behavior you describe sounds like a territorial display...

    Mesh enclosures

I have two reptibreeze cages that I had used for my chams. I do not have any chams now but was looking at a Dragon Strand and am considering getting one when I get back into keeping. From what I have seen of them and the reviews I have read, they seem to be well built cages with a lot of...

    Hawk moth dieing

Also remember that the sole purpose of the moth is sex, unlike some adult insects they do need to eat as mentioned. Pigglett79's blog does have a lot of great information to help you succeed with raising feeders. Silkworm moths and soldier flies do not need to eat but hornworm moths do. I...

    Custom Cage Cabinet/Stand

Well I am JEALOUS!!! As far as the plumbing, check out Sharkbite fittings. They are very easy to use and work with copper, pvc and pex tubing. It would not be that difficult to tap into your water line and bring the source to your stands. I actually used it to run an indoor hose off of...

    Hawk moth dieing

You can use tomato plants for the moths laying eggs; they will lay on other plants as well but not sure which. Also you do not want to let the caterpillars eat any type of solanaceous plants (nightshade/tomato/tobacco etc) as this will make them toxic for the chameleon. Pigglett79 has an...

Baby Veiled is wrinkly and sluggish

You could also try soft bodied worms such as hornworms or silkworms to help with the dehydration. Both worms have a high moisture content and can help with rehydration. Just make sure the hornworms are not wild ones as they can be toxic.
