the key is to not let it get dried out while it is out in order to avoid amputation. use the method Jan described before manually trying to tuck it in, it might take a while (several alternating times). trying to manually push back in is not a pretty process but it can be done.
I am not familiar with that particular bulb.... but some of those bulbs have to go trough a cool down period before they can be turned back on. So it might not work well with the thermostat. You can try it with out the thermostat by letting it get up to temp then try turning it off and then back...
Oh ya... you learn quick with GTP the first 3 steps when dealing with them:
1: immobilize head
2: check that head is immobilized
3: check that you checked the head is IMMOBILIZED!

the key is to keeping it moist... if it dries out then you have problems. Prolapse happens often with the Green Tree pythons and sometimes you have to push it back in if the method Jan described does not work. The first time is the hardest

That is just recording the air temp in that area. It would be wise to invest in some kind of laser temp reader. Place something in the basking area and measure the temp of that object several times over a period of time. Mass will build up heat. then you can a adjust bulb wattage or bulb height...
