Veileds are, to me, one of the species that tolerate it best.
I do not see it as inhumane. Once it dark, they go to sleep most of the time. you can try putting it inside the box and closing it.. then opening it up 5 minutes later. I find them sleeping.

Cresties are awesome! however, they hide a lot and would be most active at night. They also like to defecate on the glass, so most often than not the cage will be nasty.
I agree with your suggestions, however I would not say it is gaining the trust of a chameleon. It becomes more of conditioning - associating your presence inside the enclosure with a food response.
