Your daughter is 6? My first thought is that 6 is way too young for a chameleon. Here's my other comments:
- You mention getting started with a Pygmy. Now, I'm not an experienced Pygmy keeper, so I'll allow other people to comment regarding them specifically. But from what I do know...
After I got into chameleons I suddenly became a huge snob regarding any type of chameleon toy or decoration. You quickly point out things like "The eyes are wrong!" or "They curled the tail in the wrong direction!" etc.
Also frustrated at the general lack of chameleon anything out there, in...
This person has some chameleon videos going back about 6 months... so hopefully Leon is still healthy. I tried to leave a helpful comment on the video.
Several of his videos involve stressing his chameleon out and doing things like getting it to strike its tongue at a plastic container...
Chameleons are very individual animals who definitely have "personalities". They're very similar to birds in this manner, imo.
HOWEVER that being said, a calm, non-aggressive Veiled chameleon is the exception rather than the rule. Even males can be quite calm, hand feed, and tolerate...
Click the "View our Sponsors" link on the upper right of the page. Several of the best breeders in the US are sponsors of this page. You'll also find links there to just about everything else you'll need if you really want to get into chameleons. Very little other than crickets and maybe a...
I agree that some animals and humans will eat dirt on an instinctual level if they are not getting enough mineral nutrients.
However, at the same time, I don't think it's something to be encouraged. It's not like keepers should make sure that dirt is available to their chameleons to eat. I...
Tried it once a long time ago when I first got into chameleons. It doesn't work very well.
Whatever absorbent substance you choose will likely not be absorbent enough, and will also likely just make a completely mess when you try to clean it. If you don't clean it often enough, then you...
Yeah, you're going to need drainage. Even if you have a large bowl under the plant to catch overflow, if you're dripping and misting as often as you should, it'll fill up quick. Then you'll have to deal with emptying out the bowl, because it will get very nasty very quick and your cage will be...
I kept a Hibiscus for years with little to no problem. It was near a window, but definitely not under much direct sunlight. It just had the normal light from the chameleon's 60W bulb and UVB tube for light.
It rarely ever flowered (twice in 4 years) but it did just fine. Required lots of...
In terms of lighting, you have two factors you want to get right: heat, and UVB.
So far, I'm not sure with this bulb you're hitting either of those right. You haven't submitted any measurements for what the temperature in your terrarium is yet. I know you don't have your plant yet, so that...
I'm iffy on this being a burn. His white scales haven't been discolored at all, which is odd. I would expect all the affected area to be slightly blackened. Unless he sleeps on his side, this is also a really weird place to get a burn. One would expect a burn on the tops of the knees, and on...
I have had a male of all three species mentioned.
Jacksons: Very timid, yet very friendly demeanor. He would shy away from being handled, generally by trying to hide from your hand. Once picked up would generally be calm. He never once hissed at me. He always readily hand-fed. When I...
A little google-fu will find you lots of chameleon cages.
I use these cages, they're really good IMO.

Cage looks great, lots of green! You're very smart to get the temperatures right before your guy gets here.
What's the dish at the bottom for? Feeders or Water?
I'm in the same situation, actually. Probably ordering my Mist King today. I hadn't thought too hard about water sources, but it makes sense. I don't want to be cleaning deposits out of nozzles every month or two and changing out hoses.
I hope I have a better RO water source in Virginia...
This doesn't look like a private collection it looks like a zoo exhibit, and better than most zoo exhibits I've seen for chameleons. What an incredible setup.
She looks just incredible. Riven, I'm floored.
You really do deserve to be in the Chameleon Owner's Hall of Fame. 99% of novice chameleon owners would NOT have been able to bring her back from the state she was in when you first posted about her.
Oh, THIS will change with time. It's impossible to have a chameleon and not get used to dealing with crickets and worms. Plus, honestly hand feeding is one of the best ways to get your chameleon accustomed to you and trust you. I'd recommend tweezers if you're really squeamish around...
