3 - 4 Mo. Panther Cham - Dark & Skinny

Hello,

I am raising a 3 - 4 month old, male panther cham, Apollo. I've had him for about 2 months and he has always been very healthy.

He was eating 5 - 10 1/8" crickets (gut loaded), as well as being hand fed about 5 fruit flies daily - all of which dusted with calcium.

I have a live pothos and 2 fake vine clusters in his glass viv. I would like to get a reptibreeze eventually, but for now I have a 16"L x 16"W x 24"H National Geographic Glass Viv. with a mesh top and mesh side. The temperature is always between 60 - 90F and humidity never falls bellow 40%. A basking bulb and 80 watt UVB is on for a 12 hour cycle.

My issue is that he has begun to stop hand feeding the fruit flies, and while the crickets seem to diminish in his viv. I am not positive that he is eating. In fear that he may not be receiving enough food I purchased some phoenix worms (small, and high in calcium). I put these in a small dish (usually 3 -5) and place the dish under his vine, within 2 hours they will all vanish, so I know that he is eating at least the worms.

I don't believe that he is hunger striking because he had never had a worm before this issue arose. However he seems darker than usual, and is at times exceptionally skinny, showing his rib cage. He is still very active, does not sleep at day, and enjoys about 30 minutes of outdoor sun per day. His colors are becoming very vivid and is displaying a beautiful teal with white stripes down the side, hinting that he may be a nosy fall?

I'm just concerned that he may not be eating enough and want to ensure no mistakes are being made. Is there a way I can track his diet rather than hand feeding? Cup feeding seems to work with worms but I've had less success with cup feeding crickets and flies. Thanks, and much love cham fam!

As far as how much he should eat, my breeder gave me a helpful hint. He said that as they grow just shoot for about 125% of the volume of their head if that makes sense. So if 10 crickets piled up would be the same size as his head, feed 12-13 basically. I think it's an easier way to measure than trying to keep track of quantities since the cham is constantly growing and the crickets may be different sizes.

Hope that helps some. As far as keeping track of how much he's eaten, the crickets just get thrown into Merlin's cage and they usually all end up at the top so I can get a vague idea oh how many he ate/are left.

Let me start by saying nice cham.If you see that your chameleon is eating phoenex worms then there's nothing to worry about. Another important factor would be water. Is he drinking enough water?

You could weigh him periodically to check his growth. Also, a young fast growing Panther should be shedding every 3-6 weeks depending on their age, 3-4 weeks when really young then longer between sheds as they get a bit older.
