99 problems & humidity is one

Hello all. I just got my first chameleon (male Jackson) he's in a 18x18x36 cage and I can't keep the humidity up past like 40% for more than like 20 min. I'm currently just using a spray bottle and a little dripper. I'm thinking about getting a fogger or mister but I don't have a lot of extra cash right now I spent all I could afford on his cage all ready. That being said I know I have to get a fogger ASAP. Does any one know any thing about Zoo Med Repti Fogger. It's the only fogger I can find here is St.Louis city

I guess I should offer help rather than just tell you how awesome the title is...

Go to your local Dollar General and buy a roll of plastic sheeting, and some velcro strips. Cut the sheeting to cover 3 of the sides of your cage (I have the exact same cage). Place the velcro strips on the frame using the adhesive backing on the velcro and stick the sheeting to the velcro. Cut off any excess to clean up the look of it.

This will do a few things: Hold in humidity a bit more, keep water from going all over your house, provide a "greenhouse" effect (in my case I have it near a window), provides a bit more privacy to your cham if you get some sheeting that is opaque.

Let me know if you need any more help. I am in the KCMO area, as well.

Here is a slightly out of date pic of what I am talking about. In the pic, I am using magnets, I switched to velcro to make cleaning easier, but you will get the idea. I will update the pic soon, plus I will be making a video to put on here and Youtube of my whole setup.

When you say plastic sheeting do you mean the thick kind that is like a plastic tarp or do you mean like cling wrap? Because I was told by a friend to just put cling wrap across all 4 sides along the bottom like 7 inches
And ya I thought the name of this post would amuse.

lowes sells it in the paint section, disposable painters cloths. Its a thicker mil than a trash bag. Cling wrap would worked in a pinch but wouldnt be a good permanent solution.

Like they said cover back and side with plastic, and it will help.

What plant is in there? If no plants.... goto walmart and buy an umbrella plant, you may have to trim it to fit a 18x18x36 enclosure but it will really help the humidity.

The temperatures I dunno on for a jackson so no help there sorry.

I have a tropical hibiscus and a few fake plants but the more he marryer. Also how do I get him to cup feed? Any one know anything about that fogger I linked

the temps are why to high right now freaking heat wave in MO right now. they ae around 80-85f so im moving him to the basement today where the temps are around 70-75 in the summer.

The fake plants do nothing for humidity, a hibiscus is hard to keep alive, hence I suggested an umbrella plant, they can take alot of abuse.

I am referring to a painters type drop cloth. you can buy it in large sheets and cut it down to what you need.

As far as the fogger, it helps, but not as much as you would hope it would. I find that they work best in a smaller, all glass enclosure. For a screen cage, I would recommend regular mistings and setting up an automated drip system. I currently have a DIY rain system coupled with the fogger, both set up on a timer to go off every 2 hours for 5 minutes at a time. I also use a pump sprayer to mist every once in a while between rain cycles.

Once your enclosure is all set up, it is just a matter of making sure you don't run out of water for the system.

Thank you, I'm still improving my english ;)

ah, I see you are not from the US.I live here and I still screw up saying things myself! Not trying to be a brat....I know you are trying to help like everyone else. So thank you...

i have been "raising" plants for years keeping one alive wont be that hard for me besides it takes the same amount of heat and humidity my cham does.
for now here is my set up and my cham. keep in mind i do have more plants and vines im just waiting a few days to put them in.

You got the sheeting thing exactly how I meant! Looks good!

your setup looks great and good job with the plastic sheeting. :D Personallly though, I would have put it inside the cage for 3 reasons.

1. It stops water running down the sheet outside the cage getting everything wet

2. It stops the chamelon climbing the screen and getting too close to the basking lamp.

3. It stops the food from climbing and finding ways to escape!

This is a personal observation and by no means me putting your setup down as I think it looks great and well applied. I know from experience about the water running down the sheets on the outside of the cage and getting my carpet wet! lol :p
