A few questions? Female Veiled.

Hi all, I am after a bit of advice about my Female Veiled.

She is now about 4-4.5 months old, Growing, Eating, Shedding Very well.

Im concerned about when i should start to slow her food down. As i know they can be Mature enough from six months onwards to produce eggs.

She is very greedy and will eat what ever i put in her, feeding cup or free range,

In the morning I will put food in a cup for her, and a few free range before i go out for the day, And when her lights come on she will scoff the locusts/crickets before even going up to bask lol unlike my male who will ignore them. And head for his basking branch,

I Now feed her about 7-8 crickets/locusts a day which are all gut loaded very well.

When i come home i sometimes give her a few more 2-3 at the most as she will be looking around her viv for more food,or come to the doors when she see's me, she seems hungry all the time .

But the thing that concerns me also she is a bit of a fatty not massive, but seems like i should control her food intake. as im sure if i tipped 20 food items in her viv she would have them all.

So the question is. How much would you feed a healthy sized female Veiled at 4 to 4.5 months old?

And also, when they are mature enough to lay will they produce their adult colourings?

Im quite sure she still has a bit of growing untill she is an adult.

thanks

Sorry for the long post. :)

Does she have any mustard/yellow splotches on her yet?

i dont know how to start my own thread but i have a female veiled aswell. i got her when she was about 4.5 months and she had yellow spots on her. two months have passed and she recently has brown spots on her. is she just growing and finding new colours?

At about 5 months I would cut the feeding back to every other day. I would only feed about 6 to 8 feeders. The female will also need a lay bin.....just incase there's eggs. You will also need to cool down your temps to about 80 for basking. Here's a link to some great info on keeping a female veiled. http://raisingkittytheveiledchameleon.blogspot.com/2007/12/keeping-female-veiled.html

Hi thanks for that i have read that rasing kitty alot very helpful indeed :).

Would it harm to slow down her feeding now? or is she too young still?

I have a few pics i took of her today to show her, sorry not the best pictures.

She is very lime green still, with yellowish/mustard spots, but are quite feint but can be seen easily, camera does not seem to pick them up.

And she has a slight belly and is very thick set. Do you think she still need time to grow/mature before she can start producing clutches?

Or would you cut backfood now, and knock the heat down a little? thanks:)

Shes looks good. Shes a little tank. I would start cutting her back at the 5 month mark but i don't think it would hurt her to start now. You could slowly start to cut feeding a couple fewer feeders a day. Then go to every other day at 8-10 after a couple of weeks. Shes a beautiful fem btw.

Thanks buddy, i will start to cut back now, she seems very hungry all the time, and i have noticed if one day i dont feed her as much she will wait by the doors of viv or be very active around the bottom of the viv looking about for food, so my main concern is i dont want to let her go hungry if that make sense, but will try and cut it back alittle now, sometimes at cetain angles she really does look fat, so i think she is eating too much?

She sure it a little cutie!!!!! :) I too would start to cut back a bit now and wait another month to go to every other day.

Thanks for that, i am going to do that slightly drop her intake at the moment., then start to feed her every other day,:)

Good to hear. Shes really very pretty. You just don't want her too produce those massive sized clutches they can have if you over feed. I have a hard time myself controling my urge to overfeed. We all want our animals to be healthy and not go hungry. But you have to figure that she would go days in the wild without eating and would be burning more calories than just moving around a cage.

You can also feed her leafy greens like collards, dandelion greens, shredded carrot, shredded sweet potatoe, banana .. whatever you have. Just don't give her spinach or broccoli. Also, my female loves schefflera plants .. give it a try if you would like :)

How many crickets should I be feeding my 2 month old male veiled?
I would say just big enough to fill up the mouth. So that would be 2 / 4 crickets a day. DON'T OVER FEED! (12) That's what I do and it works. Don't waist your time and money buying small ass crickets.

A 2 month old male veiled can prob handle a 1/2 " crick. I would def be feeding more than 4 of those to a 2 month veiled. 8-10 is the norm. Of course i dont believe in just feeding only crix. he needs at least 2 other feeder options weekly. You dont want your cham to get sick of cricks and stop accepting them. That and nutrition needs are why you need some feeder options.

12 isn't overfeeding... 2-4 is underfeeding. A baby needs to eat to grow and some will even eat 30 a day but I would never allow a baby to eat 30 or recommend it. 20-30 would be over feeding a two month old.
