A not so usual pet store

So, I figured I'd tell a story, about this pet store around me that I visited today to buy my new Veiled. Upon visiting I witnessed this cham in a 2x2x4 enclosure, a bit surprised to see this alone, it was on the top shelf as to make it feel safe. Upon asking someone for assistance I saw was informed the owner of the store placed all care upon the chameleons and other reptiles and he would need to answer any questions, and he came out quick and professionally. He then proceeded to tell me EVERYTHING there was to know, as I played the dumb card and surprisingly he was correct. I started talking to him, and talking about how most stores incorrectly care for chams and he told me he noticed, and actually buys them at local petstores and then cares for and re-sells at his so they have a good life. Fecals and urates were perfect, he had a temp and humidity gage, all were in good range, he dusted all crickets and even had it on a good schedule.

It's so nice to see a store actually care for their animals and not try to just house them and sell. Upon asking him why he cared so much and how he knew so much he told me before he owned the store he actually was a scientist who traveled to the Galapagos and studied plants and animals to try and find cures for different diseases, there he fell in love with reptiles and proceeded to show me pictures of him in his journeys. If your in South Jersey and need some kind of reptiles, Bills Wonderland of Pets in Magnolia NJ; I HIGHLY recommend it.

So, onto the next thing, I now have a new 6-7 month Male Veiled. I love him already, Bill let me open the cage and stick in my hand, he walked up it and perched himself right on my shoulder, that's when I knew I was buying him haha, he's already got some beautiful coloring. Will post pictures when I get him settled in all the way; don't wanna cause him unnecessary stress. With that being said, any ideas for names?

Very interesting!

Thank you for advertising him. I think these sellers are very rare and are worth receiving free publicity for their time and dedication! If you ever meet him, you could suggest him to become a sponsor over here. I am sure he wouldn't regret it, especially if he has a website and offers shipping.

If he migrated right to your shoulder I would call him Chip. When someone asks if "you have a Chip on your shoulder" you could say that you left him at home today.

dude! does this place also have a nice parrot room???!!! this is probably one of the few good, clean, respectable pet stores out there! I visited a pet store in NJ, forget how far I was from home... anyways, it was shocking to see how nice and clean it was! the animals looked in good condition from my understanding too! funny if it were the same store, hopfully not... that would mean there were more out there! ;)

I figured he was worth a mention as he was one of the nicest and most responsible pet store owners I've ever met. I think right now he only has a Jacksons left for $150; but he told me to make sure I give him updates on the little guy every time I come back in, so I'll most definitly see him again and recommend he become a sponsor.

Lol, and I'll definitely have to think about the name chip

And nope, no parrot room :( But I think he does have more than one store, but the other is just a supply store I believe. NJ is VERY strict with exotic animals so I wouldn't be surprised to find more.

You should name him Bill or Bill jr, because he runs such a great pet store! It is good to know they do exist...somewhere.

Indeed, Cham is such a friendly guy too... If anyone walks by to see it, it just walks towards them lol, eats great, and as soon as lights go off, climbs in his little hanging bush and goes to bed and sleeps like a rock.

Why not write the shop a nice letter or give the business a thumbs up by becoming a regular customer? A "good guy" note to the local Better Business Bureau? I'm sure they would appreciate it!

Yes, gems like this are out there. I lived in NJ years ago and found some really great shops in Brick and in Manahawkin. Long time ago so they may not be there now.

Credit where credits due, it's nice to hear that there are still pet shops out there that still care about the animal, and not just about the profit!!!!

What a wonderful story! Congrats on your new cham - there's nothing quite like a friendly chameleon, they are just a pleasure to own! My Tommy was passed through 4 owners before I gave him a home, and I am still amazed at how he has kept his friendliness after all he's been through! Can't wait to see pics of your boy! :D

Thanks guys, I definitely am becoming a 100% customer there, for everything from my reptiles, to my newts, to my dogs (For their food and such; the owner refuses to sell dogs and cats because it is his belief that they should be rescued from shelters before being purchased at a store. I also wrote a letter to thank the; didn't think of the BBB note.

i think (imho) it is important for all us to give props to our lps that do care and are knowlegable about chams.

for me that is "arizona reptile center" in mesa az always helpful and i always buy my feeders there because of their excellent service.

Good to know there still out there.....i dont think ive really found one store that is vary noligable about there reptiles (chams). Quite depressing.....i cant even step foot and those big box reptile stores like petsmart... but im still looking and when i find one ill be a life time customer there and will recomend them to everyone i can.....that man should recieve an aword for the way he cares for his reptlies and the way he thinks:eek:

Thanks for creating this post and pointing attention to a pet shop that deserves to prosper.

I wish we had a petstore like this in Cincy
