Advice Needed on Cage Cleaning

Hello all,

My husband and recently lost our beautiful little beardie. She had a wasting disease of some sort that didn't respond to antibiotics. (She went into the exotic vet 3 times - with no clear underlying problem.) Our vet will be performing a necropsy on her to figure out what went wrong. If it was our fault (husbandry related concern), we want to know so we can fix it for the benefit of our other animals. We also want to know if it was infectious so we can closely monitor our other babies.

However, it will be awhile before we get the results of that. In the meantime, I want to get her cage cleaned up for a future reptile (we have another beardied that is going to soon outgrow his care and need her larger cage).

What would you all recommend in terms of disinfecting the cage? Would you recommend pitching the cage decorations?

Thanks in advance for your help.

So sorry to hear about your little guy. It's always so sad to loose a little friend.

As for cleaning your cages. Go to a beauty supply store such as Sally's Beauty Supply and buy some 40 volume (liquid not gel) peroxide. Leave everything in your cage and spray with the peroxide full strength. Let it set for about 10 minutes and then rinse. Then let your cage just set out in the sun for awhile. This want kill your plants but it might make them drop their leaves but they will come back. Speaking of your plants you will need to re-pot them or at least take out the first 3 inches of soil and replace with new soil.
