Today I heard a crunching noise, looked over in my chams cage and saw her munching on something, I thought it was a cricket but then i saw her eat like 4 dead dried leaves that were in the bottom of the pot? I have read they will nibble on live leaves but she was accually eating the dead leaves and going for more! Ever heard of that? Mabey i need to add something to her diet? She gets a HUGE variety of live foods dusted in calcium and then vionate or hertivite 1X a week.. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help,

Heidi :)

Could be a supplementation issue. How long have your vitamin supplements been opened??? They may be past due. Also , its not uncommon for chams to eat dirt . Theories as to why range from , the cham attempting to obtain some mineral or vitamin from the dirt , or the cham is attempting to ingest coarse matter to assist in scrubbing parasites from its digestive tract.

The eating of dried leaves, soil, other organic debris, chewing bark, etc, is so common that I think it would be a mistake to interpret it as a lack of supplementation, and then make changes to what you are doing. Short version, be careful to fix it before you know it is broke. There is plenty of info in this forum and others about supplementation philosophies and regimens. Happy cham keeping !
