Amy has Pneumonia

Following my suspicion that Amy had an URI, I took her to the vets today, and although he couldn't feel anything abnormal in her abdomen, he agreed to xrays after what happened with dear old Tommy.

Well, after xrays he phoned me to say that Amy actually has pneumonia in her right lung. She also has a build up of gas in her abdomen which is causing her pain and the stretched neck breathing. He also said that although he couldn't feel any eggs in her belly, the xrays showed some masses that looks likw the beginnings of a clutch. I was sad to hear about her pneumonia but also very pleased that she isn't gravid or even eggbound. She had two injections, one in each side, of antibiotics and a pain relief/anti spasmodic drug. Poor girl came home sporting a pair of nasty black bruises on her sides.

When we got home she seemed happy to stay on my hand so I snuggled her inside my cardigan for a while and she slept a little. After about half an hour she perked up a little and started moving around so I put her back in her viv. She has since eaten 3 silkworms and had some water, so I am pleased with her progress for now. She has a check up at the vets again on Saturday, so I am taking each day as it comes with her right now. I just knew something wasn't right yesterday, but hopefully being so vigilant with my chams we have been able to stop the pneumonia in it's tracks before it takes too strong a hold on her.

This is what my little baby girl looked like when I brought her home - the bruising looks so dramatic! Poor Amy. :(

Awwww....
poor girl.
im glad you caught it!
and i hope she starts to feel better sooon.

so what are they treating her with? out of curiousity.
and how did she get pneumonia?

Awe poor girl. I do hope she does well with the medications and starts feeling better soon. Please keep us updated on how she is feeling.

Tiff it looks like you beat that baby. Poor little girl and mean old doctor. But the up side is our girl will be ok soon. Give her a silkie for me, to get her better. You have a drink or something to make you better.

Not sure how she got it, she has been fine up until Tuesday night. He did say what he had given her but I forgot to write it down. I was just so happy that he could treat her and I could bring her home! I thought it was going to be a repeat of Tommy. I left him there for xrays and never saw him again. I don't think I could take that again so soon. Couldn't have caught it any sooner though as the vet wasn't in yesterday afternoon and I won't trust anyone else with my chams. I will ask more questions and ask to see the xrays on Saturday at her check up.

Laurie, forget about the drink, I had something far better than that! I had chocolate, lol! :D I have an abundance of silkies to get my baby girl better. I bought crickets on Tuesday too and she hasn't had those for a while. I also have roaches and locusts for her to snack on if she wants. I will offer her one of everything and let her take her pick. Only the best for my chameleon Princess!

That would be great thanks.
i have been trying to get info on drugs that vets give chams for various things, like what they are (antibiotic, pain med, etc) how much, what drugs treat what illness, but so far. not a whole lot.
i ask questions... no responds... :(

That is a good idea. Would make a good sticky thread in the health section. I suppose doses would be different and calculated by each chameleon's weight though, but certainly a list of drugs that are most commonly used for things would be most useful!

Yea. I mean if i have to go to a vet that is not experienced in chams, at least i can say well heres what is used to treat....
and then im sure a good vet can calculate dosage based on weight, like with any animal.

I know if it wouldn't have been to my previous research on how to treat my cham for his UI the vet wouldn't have had a clue you should look into nebulization I'm doing it with my cham and just after the first treatment of nebulization with batril diluted with saline his breathing and mucus in his mouth cleared up almost immediately it was great and a big relief and there wasn't anymore coughing and today is just his third day of treatment and he hasn't been showing anymore signs of the problems :) also remember to keep her temps up at night too, to help her fight it off easier not sure if you're doing that or not but from all I've read and talked to people it really helps a lot! Hope your baby girl gets feeling better soon!

I sort of do that now. I tell the vet what I THINK is wrong, what to treat it with, and what dosage. I do that based on Mader's book Reptile Surgery & Medicine. I guess we all do what we have to.

Amy Update

She is looking ok today. Still holds her head up at times, but she has eaten two silkworms again today. One of the bruises has gone now, and her eyes are not sunken at all, so I am encouraged by this.

Aw. Im glad she seems a bit better.

I know how worrisome it can be when an animal is sick.
ive had to deal with it all too often. (not iwth my chams, but other pets i have)
unfortunatly, its one of the things we take on when we own pets. sad, but the way of life.

on a happier note.
Im glad shes getting better. and I wish you and little miss princess (aka Amy) all the best.

Please keep us updated!

Thanks! I will keep everyone updated. She has a check up in the morning, so I am guessing he will either give her another injection or prescribe something for me to inject into her food. Oh how I love doing that! Not! It will be done though, as much as I dislike doing it - the things we do for our scaly babies, lol!:D

Good luck to Amy in beating pneumonia - there's no chance that Monty can catch it from her is there? Sorry if it's a dumb question, I just didn't know that chams can get pneumonia. Wishing her the best, and it's a great mental picture of you snuggling her in your sweater 'til she felt better! Yes, the things we do for our little ones...

i would think injecting into the silks would be easist.

i could imagine trying to inject stuff into a cricket.. i can never gt them to sit still!
