Another Newbie/Worried Dad

HAHAHA I can't lie I'm just as excited as her! but if you read the above it's for her! but I get to feed it, and clean its poop! just like it was for the dog and the fish!! she is only seven!

I have to say that I think that's fantastic that you're doing this project with your daughter :)

Tamara offerd me a great deal on a panther! but i got burned with a bad fish experience and now the wife keeps saying "its the fish deal all over again"
If I BUY A PANTHER AND IT DIES! THE CAGE WILL BE MY NEW HOME FOR PROTECTION FROM THE WIFE!

Honestly, I would buy what would be appropriate for the jumbo cage you've got there.

Reason I say that, is if you do choose a younger veiled and put him in that cage right away he could have some problems hunting down his food.

I would take a 6 month + chameleon of whatever species you can get in that sized enclosure.

P.S. your cage is well big enough for you to live in for quite some time :D

Your a 100% right! I was just talking to Drew at Chameleon Nation and my cage is to big for a baby cham!
I will have to buy or make a smaller cage for the first six months of its' life!
of whatever I get!
I told my wife! She has put my alarm clock and a package of wetnaps in the cage! I better top up the dripper and turn on my basking light! It feels like its' going to be a long cold night in my house!

Here's a pic with my 7yr old daughter, she is the reason for all this!
No regrets:):D
She's in it cause, I have no money for a chameleon! lol just joking!!

Quick note about branches brought from outside. You should either bake them in the oven at higher temps where parasites and other insects can't survive but make sure u don't burn down your house, the other safe way is to soak them in water/vinegar mix but make sure u wash it off completely even though vinegar is pretty safe to use I would soak them in clean water for awhile before I put them in a cage. Looks like you have done a lot of research , that's good but don't stress yourself out over little details, some people say that chameleons very fragile, yes they are in comparison to other reptiles but they are pretty hardy animals as long as you do your part such as cleaning, feeding, misting, suplementing etc. If you do your part You will have happy healthy animal

Wow-that was alot to read through!

I LOVE the cage-wish I had some that big that looked so nice.

If I were you, and since this is your first cham, get a 6 month old MALE Veiled. It could go right into that cage, and will make your learning curve much, much easier. I would nix the idea of the branches from outside. There are plenty of fake vines you can get to go in the cage amongst the live plants. That way you have no worries of introducing something you do not want into your cage.
If an older cham bites, it does hurt, and can draw blood/rip skin. Also keep in mind that MOST chams are aggressive and territorial. Out of 20+ adults I have, only one never bites and is super easy to handle, and that is my huge male Veiled. So as long as you are OK with a look don't touch animal, all will be well! However-even though the majority of mine never get handled (grabbed/taken out of the cages), all of them are happy to grab a snack out of my hand, so they are not afraid-they just don't want to be grabbed.

I have bathed all my branches in boiling water even got some on my foot! It was hot enough to stop me in my tracks! it definitely will kill parasites!!
I explained to my daughter that we will be getting a older one! It's the smart thing to do! I explained babies can't move away from thier parents lol!
Finding a older 6 month+ cham in good shape might be a challenge here in Ontario Canada.
If it becomes aggressive it will be like a fish, seen but not touched!
Neighbours saw me building my cage in the garage and now they are wondering when the wife and I are going to start performing our magic acts!!
Thanks for your advice guys! Hopefully we will find one soon!
