i have a clear 40 watt in a dimming dome lamp, would there be any difference between a clear or white one?

Not really, they are just for heat. I have clear ones, I think it looks brighter :)

I would think the white would shield the eyes a bit from the glowing element in the bulb.....but that's just my 2 cents. I use the soft white bulbs.

I have noticed that the clear ones typically will burn the leaves of my plants while the white ones of the same wattage don't. If that helps.

well, ill have to see what ive got in my light bulb cabinet :p if i can find a white one, i suppose ill use it, if not, will stick with the clear one until i go to the dollar store :p

I know this is an old thread but I have put a bit of thought into this since I buy like 40 bulbs at at time.

All bulbs have ratings on the packaging. From looking at this and just sticking my hand under the bulb I have concluded that between clear and frosted:

Clear gives you the most direct basking per watt and per dollar because the light just shoots straight through the clear glass. They apparently have longer lives because they throw the heat out more efficiently. Higher risk of burn.

Frosted diffuses the beam and spreads out the heat. You get less lumens but they are a bit safer and softer. Def better for hatchlings.

Conclusion - CLEAR if you want a more focused basking spot but don't want to pay for flood lamps and FROSTED if you want to create more of a general warm zone.

In my opinion I say go with frosted and place it very close. If your cham is not basking as much as you feel it should then clear helps them find the spot better -- more like a beam of sunlight. If using 40 watt the risks of clear are not a big deal.

thanks! and yea, this is an old thread :p but i decided on the frosted ones, and i have a dimming clamp lamp, but currently have a 100 watt bulb and its a couple inches from the screen, but he has a perch further down..linus usually settles on the side of the screen between the top and the perch and i have the light in the corner, so he's directly under it..he gapes sometimes, but not often enough for me to permanently move the light, as my room temps fluctuate, sometimes hes right on the top under the bulb, sometimes not, but he has enough of a gradient he can feel comfortable wherever :)
