I was told by the vet and reptile shop that Chlorexidine Gluconate is safe to use of the plant to disinfect plants. They use it surgeries and is supposed to be non toxic. What do you guys think??

I think that is the chemical name for Novalsan. If that is the case it is fine to use in a diluted solution. It is also used as a mouth wash.

I actually think it's Chlorhexidine with an extra h. :p

Syn is very close

Chlorhexidine diacetate is Nolvasan.
Chlorhexadine gluconate is also diluted and used as a reptile safe disinfectant and wound wash.
Hibiclens is one brand name for chlorhexadine gluconate.

You are correct. Upon further research I was realized I was off but couldn't find the thread.

Howdy Matt,

Here's a post that I did a couple of years ago... https://www.chameleonforums.com/safe-disinfectant-your-chameleon-8186/#post61526

Funny thing about Nolvasan (chlorhexidine diacetate) vs. anyone's generic chlorhexidine gluconate; Nolvasan is regulated by the EPA and chlorhexidine gluconate is regulated by the FDA, if I remember correctly. Vets often use the two interchangeably but technically speaking they have somewhat different properties. I asked a chemist acquaintance of mine about it and even he wasn't easily able to find me better clarification of the practical differences. For my money, I'd go with generic chlorhexidine gluconate if you feel the need to have either one . Better yet, buy a gallon of generic, bring it to the next SBCK meeting and split it up with all of us :)! I did that a couple of years ago with both generic and also Nolvasan on another occasion. A gallon makes over 120 gallons of properly diluted product. I recall paying less than $20 ($15?) for an undiluted gallon of generic. Nolvasan is usually at least $40 a gallon. I still have 5-10 ounces of undiluted Nolvasan left.

P.S. Always follow the dilution instructions! It can be very dangerous to do otherwise :(.
