Are Carrots Okay?

My Male Cham just took a bite out of a carrot.. it was maybe 1/2" long...

Will he be okay?

lettuce and greens should be fine. avoid spinach and other dark greens. dandelion greens are really nutritious. thats my uros favorite food.

I have fed my veiled chameleons greens (dandelion, kale, collards, endive, escarole, ONCE IN A WHILE...ROMAINE LETTUCE, etc.) and veggies, chopped or slivered or diced finely, (carrot, squash, sweet potato, zucchini, green peppers, sweet red peppers, etc.) and a little bit of fruit (apple, pear, melon, berries, etc.). They also eat leaves from the plants in their cages.

Thanks for the list. It will help alot making their diet more umm better? Something besides just crickets. I am sure they will LOVE that.

Ahh,I see you here,so I guess my carrot paste syringe orally is fine for him,I guess no vitamin a supplement is necessary
Hello and welcome!

I believe feeding a chameleon fruits and veggies is an older practice that is no longer recommended. However, you are able to feed these nutritious fruits and vegetables to your feeders, which will in turn give nutrients to your chameleon once they have consumed the bug. I've attached a 'gut load' information sheet for your convenience.

Please let us know if you have any further questions!

@lee jian heng said…”Ahh,I see you here,so I guess my carrot paste syringe orally is fine for him,I guess no vitamin a supplement is necessary”….there are two forms of vitamin A …prEformed and prOformed.

PrEformed comes from retinol (animal sources) and prOformed comes from beta carotene, etc. sources (from veggies and greens, etc.). PrOformed sources are converted by the body into the useable form but prEformed sources are fat soluble and ready for the body to use and can be stored in the body. So…prEformed sources can lead to overdoses but prOformed sources can’t..

It’s thought that not all chameleons (or maybe no chameleons at all) can convert the beat carotene found in veggies such as carrots to the useable form of vitamin A …or at least cannot convert it efficiently…so we dust the insects twice a month with a vitamin powder that contains a prEformed source to ensure the chameleon gets some but won’t overdose on it. Gutload or food fed to the insects can have beta carotene sources included in the diet too.

You could give some carrot paste to the chameleon but it won’t likely help with a vitamin A issue….IMHO it’s better to feed it to the insects.
Hope this explains it a bit for you.

Please remember I’m not a vet…I’m just speaking from experience.

I am not familiar with any of those and so I would personally not recommend using them on a chameleon. Especially if you are using them as a skin care routine.
This is what I do:

Calcium without Vitamin D3 on every feeding
Repashy LoD on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. This has multi-vitamins as well as vitamin D3 I don't need to use anything else in my supplement routine.
