hi i'm just checking about my chameleon Jukkas colours. when he was younger he was pale brown but you could see when his colours started coming through. He is just over a year now and he only shows his bright reds and yellows off when he's asleep (i believe that this is what they do in the wild to blend in and not get eaten) and the rest of the time he is brown and green. He's in perfect health generally and has had no problems apart from one sperm plug about 6 months ago, good eater and drinks lots and is very active. He has the right heat and everything i'm just not sure if that's just what his breed(sambava) is like in the day because other people on here have chams that are always bright colours. My local reptile store where i got him are very good and said he is fine and is beautiful. I may just be paranoid but i just want my mind to be put at rest.

It isn't unusual for a chameleon not to show vivid colors all the time. Actually, its kinda normal for many. Often those colors are used to ward off potential threats from other chameleons, or similar aspects. Like you said, often during sleeping, though in my opinion not to "blend in" but maybe raise the alarm for those who may be interested in a quick snack (bright colors are often used to warn of bitter taste or toxins). I have noticed after some males reach sexual maturity they will often show off while basking. My boy will display great colors when in natural sunlight.
