Are super worms ok?

So, I see a lot of people talking about super worms on here. I've read a number of care guides as well, all of which mentioned super worms being a good addition to your Chameleon's diet. However, friend of my who has owned Chams before told me I should never feed them Supers. He told me that super worms can burrow through the Chams' stomach, and that they won't eat them if you crush the head. Was this information incorrect? I just got my Veiled a day ago, so I'm still new to this. He's currently just eating crickets, but I want to diversify his diet to the appropriate extent. Thanks!

I'm not sure about the truth of your friends statement, I doubt it but don't take my word for it. Anyways, I think it's great that you're looking to diversify your cham's diet! When it comes to the use of super worms, they're really only a treat, the dog biscuit of the chameleon world if you will. I would only recommend about 2 a week for your scaly friend. But again, the more diverse the diet, the better! I suggest you pick up some silkworms, hornworms, and dubia roaches from our site sponsors to add some spice into your cham's diet.

Thanks for the input, on all my threads!

Not a problem! Chameleon forums saved my butt when I got my chameleon, so I'm more than happy to try to aid the community. Best of luck with your cham and never be afraid to ask more questions!

I haven't used superworms, and have heard on the rare occasion they can bite, but it is a myth that mealworms/supers eat through stomaches. If your cham is a good chewer they'll be dead fast and stomach acid will most definitely kill them regardless. If you search the forum a lot of people seem to have asked this question.

It is possible for them to bite, and generally bite the inside of the mouth or sometimes face. But it's less of an issue than this whole stomach thing that people talk about XD that myth has been around for a while. It has more to do with people who were feed leopard geckos superworms that were far to large for them and the superworm would injure them on the way down, it often could cause vomiting up the worm and a lot of blood and eventual death of the gecko. But I feed young supers to my leopard geckos. Most of them smaller than mealworms fed to geckos. And they get eaten no problem. If I feed any larger I feed recently molted ones and don't feed any larger than mediums. Chams can take huge ones down depending on the size of your cham. And it's because they chew a lot and have stronger jaws than geckos.

Andee said it perfectly. When I give my Veiled supers as treats I crush the head just to be safe. They will still move around enough for the cham to notice and go in for the kill.

i feed mine once a week a couple super worms. Dubias and crickets are staple.

Superworms are fine for a small part of their diet. People sometimes confuse super worms with mealworms. Mealworms are not a good feeder.
