Here is one of two blue tongued skinks I am keeping, hopefully a pair. They are small only about 11 inches or so. I caught a blurry pic of the tongue.

Im pretty sure you worked there at 1 time or another, youve got it pretty much Perfect..

Nice Blue Tongue...they do get used to being handled with regular handling and make great pets.

Always had them in the backyard for as long as I can remember and never a year went past where we didnt rescue at least one injured blue tongue that had been hit by a car and take it to the vet.

I watched a great documentary about a year ago on them and how when they mate up they do so for life with the same partner, basically they are monogamous which is rare in a reptile. It was very sobering to see a mate standing over its dead partner that had been hit by a car when trying to cross a highway. I Would love to watch it again but I cant remember what it was called. Its amazing to see that dedication in a lizard and the mate itself often ends up in danger as it stays with its partner on the road.

The bloke who filmed it is a Scientist and spends him spare time just cruising the outback highways looking for this so he can rescue and research. They are great lizards to keep :)

Panther I think you mean its cousin Tiliqua rugosa the bobtail or shingleback skink, also known as pinecone lizard and sleepy lizard and so on.
These also have blue Tongues and are the only observed, tracked species considered monogamous. Though its possible that very small locations of northerner Bluies like T. scincoides intermedia above might pairup over several seasons, most of them including their common south eastern locale Teliqua Scincoids Scincoids, dont.
Most of Scincoids bare multiple young, with northern locales having smaller clutches.
T.Rugosa on the otherhand have been tracked and pair with the same animal for many years, and some as you mention above, become roadkill due to reluctance to leave a roadkilled soulmate. T.rugosa however expends much more energy per clutch, baring two babies at max, more often one. The newborn is a third the mothers size. The equivalent of a woman giving birth to a 3 y.o. child. They generally only produce young every second year,if they bare two. :)
All Teliqua skinks bare the bright blue tongue excepting the former Tiliqua gerrardi. The Pink Tongue Skink. now Hemisphaeriodon gerrardi.

P.S These used to be called Trachydosaurus rugosa then a taxon change put them in with Teliqua.

Although I wouldn't call it monogamy, because there can be multiple females. Prehensile tailed skinks (Corucia zebrata) form a sent based family group. Usually after they are established any new "intruder" into the group, male or female will be attacked and if in a caged environment, killed.

They also have one of the more evolved sense of parenthood, actually looking after young. One of the more interesting species of skink to study..IMO

Nice article Dan. (I skimmed) I'm going to read it in better detail over my coffee in just a minute.

Edit: Nice bluey Ryan!

Love the blue tongue skinks. I have two myself. They are easily handled by my 4 year old daughter. They love to be held, eat like pigs and are constantly burying themselves.

Congratulations Ryan. I LIKE IT when other people have more critters than I do and the all seem to just follow you home :p.

I like the Pink Tongue skink as well, but I guess they are real tough to keep in captivity.

The show that had the mourning (not morning) skink was one of David Attenboroughs and I am going to guess it was on Life in Cold Blood (Dragons of the Dry?) , but it was definately DA as I watched it not too long ago.

I am actually going to pickup a pair of Tanimbar Island Blue Tongued Skinks in a couple of months.

An interesting note . Nigel Marvin http://www.nigelmarven.com/ from animal planet also picked up a couple of northerns up at the show from the guy I picked mine up from.

The Tanimbars are really nice! I look forward to working with some more of these guys in the future.
