baby chameleon sleeping during the day..

because they will close their eyes and rub their eyes. Get rid of that light! I have seen other members on here use the desert series light and have problems with their chameleons eyes. Get a Zoo med Reptisun 5.0 tube light. If you need to suspend it you can put block of wood or a stack of books on each end to raise it up. Some people suspend theirs from the ceiling with chains. Most likely if you change your lighting you will see improvement and your cham should not close his eyes. If he is still doing it, then there is something else going on, maybe parasites or something. As Jann said, get your chameleon outside in the sun and get rid of that desert series light. They are too strong for chameleons eyes. You can try the Reptisun and if that bothers your cham still then don't use any uvb at all for now.

would you happen to know if you can use the zilla fixture with the reptisun bulb?

There is no need to and it introduces another variable when you already have problems. I keep my babies without plants until they are6" or so in length.
If there was no problem I would say go ahead and do it. But since there is, wait until things are correct.

And I agree with the others- sunshine better than tubes.

Don't know anything about the tube you are using. But sunlight always better.

Puddles here and there still bad- better to hand mist an even coat of droplets everywhere and let dry completely between mistings. Or if a screen cage, mist for 30 minutes 1 or 2x per day and leave to dry the rest of the time...

the only reason I need the plant is because the humidity doesn't get higher the 50 and it's usually at 30....which is why I have the monsoon going every 30 minutes is to try to get the humidity up

You are better off running a humidifier in the room rather than using a mister or fogger to raise humidity. Constant dampness will cause babies to close their eyes- and constant dampness is the method the monsoon is using to raise the humidity.

Humdity for panthers isn't very critical anyway. I've never had a problem from too low humdity so I've forgotten the exact percentage necessary as I've never had to think much about it, but remember reading in a few sources that it is surprisingly low (30 percent or so? verify with the AVS chameleons book or ferguson's panther chameleons book since I'm foggy as to the exact figure). As long as they do not dehydrate between waterings, it really isn't a huge deal. You can see dehydration in babies because the skin will show it. (dry wrinkled).

i just turned off the basking light thats a daylight basking spot by exo terra thats 50 watts....and he kinda opened his eyes and then immediately saw a cricket and went to hunt him...so that would mean that it was probably hurting his eyes?...or am i just hoping its that easy? haha!

I do not understand why, but I found that out from lots of personal experience.

I've been breeding chameleons for 20 years and in the 90s produced hundreds and hundreds of panthers. I used to hand mist and raise in aquarium tanks or plastic tubs. Every time with every species of chameleon ( a couple dozen I've bred?) constant dampess is a problem and will lead to babies with eyes closing. I avoid it now by misting a couple times a day for 30 minutes and using screen enclosures, and leave things dry between. I understand the problem of constant dampness because I have experienced it myself in the past when I was new at it.

This experience is also why I can tell you with confidence that if your vitamins are no good you can also experience these symptoms. Too little or a bad brand and you will have these problems. Too much is bad also.

And lots of personal experience is why I can say with full confidence a 90 degree basking spot is not going to cause this problem.

It is possible your UV tube is causing it- I don't have any experience with problems from these tubes, but that is probably because I have limited experience with the new high powered tubes from various brands. You cannot go wrong with sunlight. Just make sure he's got shade.

could it have been my basking light?...because i just tested each light with him and when i turned that one off he started walking around.....another unrelated question...with the dusting - is there a time period that he has to eat the crickets to get the calcium?

well the longer he waits to eat the crickets the more of the dust is gonna come off.

I keep 2 to 3 month olds in the very low 80's. I see you are in FL so get your cham outside. The natural UVB is great for your cham and may help with the eyes. The lights are strong for babies and can bother their eyes. If you can't keep him/her outside allot during the day then raise the lights up way off the top of the cage. I'm attaching my blog for new keepers for you below.

In my opinion 85 is too warm for a baby. How close are the lights to the top of the enclosure? New lights often are to strong for babies eyes. Try turning the lights off for a couple of days and see if that helps. If it does then hang the light 6 to 8 inches from the top of the cage until he gets older.

I'm
In California and I do sometimes I've done a lot of research and tried to make sure I had the wright environment for him but I'm going to try everything I can
