baby panther chameleon tongue problem vet report

Well I took my little crazy eyes cham to the vet last friday, about 5 days ago. The vet was Dr. Zellner. She prescribed him with .02 dose of metacam every 24 hours for 5-7 days starting friday.

She said the tongue issue is from one or both of the following:
abyss deep in the mouth
tongue strain (pulled it too hard)
tongue wrapped around something and got injured
no signs of infection at all. this is so weird


I've been dosing for 5 days now and I see no improvement with his tongue shooting. So, she told me that if I didn't see improvement, then I would have to bring him in again. She said she would have to sedate him (put him to temporary sleep kinda ) so she can open his mouth easier and take his tongue out. She wants to pull the tongue out of his mouth and see if theres an abyss or something... does this seem right? And I dont mean amputatoin, i mean she just wants to pull it out and look at it. but I'm scared that he won't be able to retract it or something
Does all this seem right? I think it does, but Im just worried.

I think it sounds perfectly normal for a vet to thoroughly examine a tongue in that way. They will need to see as much of the tongue as possible to check for signs of health. You are (most likely) just worrying too much, probably like I would.

Could u let me know what they say plz as i am having the same trouble with my cham i was told i was feeding her to much calcium with vitamin d3 in it so i got the right suplment amd theirs still no change

well I have an appointment this monday at 7am to drop him off and have him slightly sedated. I really hope everything goes well during the sedation as he is still not even 6 months old and I just hope it doesnt kil him I also hope that his tongue will get better.

to the member above me, I would only say its a calcium deficiency if it started gradually. If his tongue stopped working completely normally out of no where, then its most likely an injury of some sort unfortunately or an infection, abyss, etc. I would take your cham to the vet as well as I did because It brought some relief to me and made his tongue work better (the metacam antiinflamitory) but his tongue stilll misses crickets. He gets dusted full time with reg calcium, repashys one or twice a week, herpivite once a months, and even d3 once a month even though he goes outside alot.

No sign of infection??? That's what an abscess is...an infection. But, she hasn't done this exam yet to tell either way. Chams heal slowly. I wouldn't really expect to see much improvement in 5 days. A gradual tongue problem points more to nutrition however.

Could be the supplements although it very well may not be anything to do with them. Just stick to plain calcium and don't use the repashy you can then use the other two twice a month or less depending on outside time length.
