This morning my mom came back into the house with a baby sparrow that she found trying desperately to get back into a tree as it had fallen out and could not get back up. So she then brought him in and we made him a nest and got him some water by dropping a water droplet on his beak that he drank but wouldn't drink anymore afterwards.
She had been told a long time ago that once a sparrow was touched by humans the other birds would then reject him as they could smell us on him (we later found out this was incorrect). So, we rushed out and bought a bird cage and everything we thought he could need and we came back and got him to eat a little bit of bread that was soaked in milk.
After doing that we did some research and upon our findings we found that it was indeed false that they would reject the bird after being touched by us.
We rigged the cage tied on to a bookshelf turned around touching some perches on a gate that he could climb and reach the tree hopefully and get reunited with his parents that lived with an entire social group of sparrows in this tree.
All of the sparrows in the tree were chirping to him and he would chirp back as if they were all coaching him through it, he then jumped onto the first perch.
They all started chirping again as if saying, " You can do it, just a few more good jumps!" He jumped up again but fell down just barely missing the perch he was aiming for, but was saved and landed on a perch just a little bit lower.
Two more jumps and he was back up to where he was when he fell. They chirped at each other again, and we really started to realize just how many sparrows actually lived in that tree as they were all chirping and cheering him on!
He then jumped up to another perch, which was at the top of the gate, and he was just one big jump away from a branch leading him to his family. But, at this jump there wasn't any perches he could land on if he missed this time. He went for it and jumped. He fluttered his wings but he still couldn't fly as he was still a baby. Sadly, he missed the branch and fell to the ground, back where everything had originally started.
I went out and picked him up grabbed a branch and lifted myself up while holding the bird in my other hand and put him in one of the branches that could give him another chance to make his way up.
He jumped on the branch, everybody still chirping away coaching him on what to do. he made his way up the branch, jumped onto another getting closer and closer to his family. At this point I could see a larger female and a larger male, larger than most of them there, sitting together on a perch looking intently at what seemed to be quite possibly their baby.
He made his way all the way up the tree and was reunited with his family. Silence then overtook the tree as if this hectic morning was now over and everybody's tension was eased as they regained their baby.
We then took everything we bought to take care of him back and returned it and when we came back, all of the birds were out of sight, quiet, and calm. As if it was just any other day almost as if they forgot what happened just this morning.
Quite a busy day if you ask me! Made me feel good that we could help him out and get him back to his family.
Sorry that I didn't take any pictures didn't think of it at the time, just wanted to get him back with his family.
