Baby veilds hatching but dying

When I first made this post I thought the eggs were hatching, they weren’t. The first few I lost was due to them bursting. Weather they burst from bacteria or too much water in the vermiculite well never know. I’m thinking it is probably a little bit of both. I think bacteria probably explains the discoloration better than any other ideas we’ve had....

I candled all the eggs last night and I can still see movement in almost all of them.

Since we last spoke no more eggs have split but several are starting to sweat. Around lunch today we had this little guy crawl out of one of the eggs that had a split in it!

So my veilds are finally starting to hatch! But I have two problems. I don’t know when this started due to me working 12 hrs a day for the last 18 days and of the three that hatched none of them made it out of the shell. I don’t know when they started to hatch but it was long enough ago that the dead babies had a bit of white mold on them.

I know your not supposed to help them hatch, the whole survival of the fittest thing, but is there any thing I can do to make it easier for them to escape the shell on their own? Or is it just going to be what it’s going to be at this point?

This is my first hatch so I have no clue what I’m talking about but the ones that have pipped and died all appear to be fully formed and healthy looking. I’m a science nerd so I couldn’t resist taking a closer look at the ones that didn’t make it. Do the bigger ones appear to be normal sized hatchlings? The smaller ones came from eggs that died somewhat recently.

Fair warning, I find the pics below fascinating but if your easily grossed out I suggest you don’t look at these pics.

And the ones with splits, I’m assuming those will be the next to hatch?

one of my family members who used to breed geckos had the same problem. He told me that a mix of fungus and bacteria attacked the eggs after he candled them. best thing to do is sterilise everything and make sure you dont open the egg tub to frequently. you can always build a still air box if you do wanna candle them though.

Wonder if my star san trick i use with silkies would work on eggs. Its a slightly acidic (or was it base) edible cleaner to keep your beer from catching a cold, you never rinse the stuff off.

I absolutely don't touch my eggs when I candle them. I shine through the top and have never had a problem. the less you mess with them the better the hatch rate in my experience.

What a horrible sight, these pictures broke my heart. I’m sure it must have been difficult for you to go check on your eggs to find this has happened after such a long time caring for them and the preparation/research required to get to this point. It is such a joy to see that one of the babies is doing good though. I realy can’t help, but I just wanted to wish you luck with the rest of your babies. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I candle them from the top as well with an LED pen light, never moving them.

Lots of sweating going on but haven’t seen any other babies breaking out yet.

im not 100% sure about chams but it will take a bit of time. it seems like it takes foreveerrrr...

Depending on the species it can vary greatly between first and last. My veiled clutches take about 3 months to hatch.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think Fireborn is saying her veilds go from laid to hatching in 3 months. I think she is saying that there can be as much as three months between the first egg in a clutch hatching and the last one of that same clutch hatching.

I think you are correct. @Fireborn said between the first and the last hatched egg.

its a beer brewing steriliser which is completely bio degradable and safe to consume. you can leave the suds on the container and it doesnt harm the flavour of the brew or you(hopefully)...
