Baby veilds hatching but dying

Thank you for sharing these photos. We all can learn from them. I have no idea what might have caused this problem, I once had 2 Crested Geckos babies, one hatched far too early and died, the other egg became huge, I mean really huge, and then exploded, the animal inside was intact but too small and dead of course. I think it was too cold in my apartment for a while and that might have caused the problem. So your babies didn´t hatch but the egg exploded, is that possible? And sorry for eventual grammatical mistakes, I write from Austria, Europe.

this is due to lysis or diffusion. there was too much of a drastic humidity. the egg absorbed too much water.

To be totally honest this is my first time hatching chameleons so I don’t really know. But some of the more senior members on this site have told me that it is possible. So far the most likely reason seem to be too much water in the hatching media or some type of bacterial infection causing the eggs to burst. I just got home from work and found one more egg has burst since I last checked it about 530 this morning. The hatchling inside of the egg that burst is already discolored so I’m guessing he probably died a couple days ago and the egg is just now bursting.

I am so sorry, that is so awful. To see its little curled up form and knowing that it will never uncurl and never get to open its pretty little eyes is just heartbreaking I sincerely hope the future is bright for some of your chameleons, and I trust that it will be. Gosh this is a crazy challenge you have! I feel quite certain that you have a dual problem! The discoloration is very likely due to bacteria! Too much water is most certainly the other part of the problem! Too much water will also cause the bacteria to spread between eggs with more ease! How many eggs do you have left?

By now your incubation medium must be loaded with bacteria! My suggestion is that you get new incubation medium (my favorite is vermiculite) I would also get gold bond foot powder and just put a little dusting in the vermiculite, just a pinch! Mix just enough sterile water into the vermiculite in order for just one drop of water to drop out of it when you take a handful of vermiculite and squeeze it as hard as you can.

Now transfer the eggs to a new container one by one, thoroughly washing your hands between every egg!!! Put the lid on (lid needs to have 3 to 5 small holes in it evenly spread on the lid) and get them back in the incubator!

How are you sterilizing your water? Boil? Star San? Iodine? That is one thing I did not do, I used demineralized water from un-opened jugs.

On a more positive note I saw my lone hatchling OPENLY eating and drinking before I left for work. Until this point he would always wait for me to leave before he would eat/drink. My son and I have set up a WIFI camera so we can monitor him form another room.

Yup, boiling water will get the chlorine our and sterilize it. I suggested the gold bond foot fungus powder because it prevents fungal growth. There are a few kinds of fungi that can also harm your eggs.

iodine messes with the calcium and tries to take electrons creating calcium iodide basically destroying the egg. dont risk it.

Came home this evening to find another hatchling! But this one still hasn’t opened his eyes yet. I think he was sleeping when I found him so hopefully he will open them tomorrow before I leave for work.

And I noticed there is a small hole in his belly with just a tiny bit of something poking out of it. I’m assuming thats how they absorb the yolk? Is it normal for that to be open after they have left the shell? Does something like that require any special or extra care?

Newest hatchling has both eyes wide open and the hole in his belly has completely closed.

some times hatchlings carry their yoke sack around for awhile before it falls off.

@Sampson87 I take offense to your implication that somehow this is the breeder's fault that research would have prevented.

Let's just start with your warning to anyone planning breeding to do their research. I hate to break it to you, but their is very little scientific literature about breeding chameleons. It is just not written down anywhere and most of the people who answer questions have little experience or special knowledge.

No one knows why the eggs failed. I know many reason why eggs might have poorly calcified shells anywhere from too many eggs in the clutch or a female that has produced many clutches so her reserves are too low, to MBD, to just plain mistakes in the reproductive system. To suggest that research could prevent this is suggesting the breeder did a bad job. @Brodybreaux25

I wasn't trying to imply that it was the breeders fault at all. Atleast i did not mean for it to come out like that. All I meant is for anyone who wants to get into breeding make sure they take the time reading on the subject. I was very sorry that the breeder had this happen. I know this wasn't their fault, I just want to apologize if thats how my previous post sounded. Once again, very sorry for your loss.

What is veiled hatchling poop suppose to look like? These two finished hatching this morning so I removed them from their containers and put them in a shallow dish inside the terrarium that I’m keeping the other hatchlings in. When they’re strong enough and ready they can just climb out . I noticed there poop looks a little red is this normal looking poop?
