Just had a couple shoots of my babies that hatched. Broke my camera so I had to borrow someone elses. Not great pictures. I am just excited and wanted to share.
Yes it is my first. They have been in incubation since late last Novemeber. I kept going back on how many to keep. I decided on eight. The rest where given to a local breeder. I know they are in good hands with him. I wanted it to be enjoyable and not a huge cost for a potential one time thing that is why I decided on keeping the low number.
All was not well though. One of the chameleons either came out deformed, under developed or I guess a possible injury. His belly near the back two legs was split. It looked as though a small piece of intestine was hanging out. There was nothing I could really do for him. He died at some point the first night.
The rest are all doing great. Only one ate the first day. All have eaten the second and the third. I think that is a good sign. One even got on his back two legs, swayed back and forth with his mouth opened when I peaked in the top of his little cage.
I have them in these cool little containers I found in the supermarket. They are 7.5"x7.5"x8" and are plastic. I cut the tops and put screen on them. The bottoms where drilled with small holes for drainage with screen over them. I did not really think this would be an issue but I did it any way. I also glued some screen along the back wall and parts of the sides. I figured this way the food would come to them. They each have two real branches and two fake branch sections (with leaves). I have not seen any of them drink. I do not really think this is an issue at this point.
These little guys are fun to watch. I will try to get someones camera and have some more pitures in the next week.
Congratulations! There is nothing cuter than baby chameleons. I still get stressed out by the whole process though. And I get nothing done watching the babies. I'm glad you are keeping some of them too
