Baby's parasites

Some of yous may remember I was complaining earlier about my baby Bishop not eating or growing.. Well, turns out he's got 2 parasites. 2 for god's sake! How the hell they keep their animals at the shop? My girl is healthy, and they had no contact. So it's either Bishop got it through food here, or I got him already with it, which I'm more inclined to believe cause his eating wasn't that great from day 1 and he probably was kept with other babies at the store.

I got antibiotics for him, he should be fine. Got a few questions though. First of all, when do I disinfect his cage? One antib is for 3 days, another for 5. Should I disinfect it somewhere in the middle, say after 2-3 days? And another question, what do I do with plants? I mean it would be pretty hard to properly clean them. Should I just chuck them out and get new ones?

What type of parasites are we talking about? 5 days doesn't seem very long. Do you have a follow up appointment? My advice would be to start with new plants if you can, or repeatedly clean the ones you have.

I have a few questions. Most parasitic treatments arent just a 3 or even 5 consecutive day treatments. Usually it takes two or three sets of deworming as they lay eggs and you have to wait for them to hatch to kill.

What parasites did he test positive for?
What drugs were prescribed?
What is the product strength and dosage amount labeled on the bottle?
What does your animal weigh?

With any parasite i would clean the cage thoroughly every day and keeping up on removing any stool asap. Typically it hits vines or plants on the way down ;)

my partner went to pick up the medication. He is very absent-minded, so he didn't ask anything. Thus I don't really know and won't be able to phone till Monday (working night shifts this week).
the meds are Baycox 2.5% 0.01ml x 3 syringes and Panacur 2.5% 0.1 x 5
Apparently she just said to give it to him and then phone her some time next week.
I googled the meds, the first one is for coccidia, the 2nd is a dewormer.

The baby is 10g

I clean poo every day, what I meant was a proper clean with bleach and boiled water. How soon should I do it? I can't do it every day, I work full time and it would take forever to disassemble the enclosure and sterilize it

oh yeah, I ordered some Reptoboost. Think that would be of help?
Also what side effects should I expect?

If he has coccidia, cleaning the cage daily is part of the process to get rid of them. Im not familiar with baycox but im sure there has to be follow up dosings after the first set. Coccidia is not something easily kicked out. It does require a bunch of work and a couple more fecals done at your vet as you pass the different stages..:/ It isnt like most parasites.

Side note: Maybe set up a rehab set up for the next two to four weeks while your combating this and give his regular cage a serious deep down cleaning. Boiling water 10% bleach water everything. Any live plants just toss.. Id personally just start over new if you use a hospital set up ;) Some here use a high grade peroxide solution to clean with. Someone may chime in with experience with the peroxide.

You mentioned a antibiotic in the first post..What type of antibiotic is he on?

Every animal reacts to treatments differently. Some decrease appetite while others will keep going like normal. Best thing to do is keep record of his wieght weekly as you are going through this. If he is losing weight with no appetite you may have to step in to help him work through this.

Thanks!
I'll see what I can do. Need to buy another enclosure then,

I'll phone the vet when I can to know for sure. My boyfriend was useless.. well, at least he brought the meds.

Regarding antibiotics, thats just me assuming this Baycox is an antibiotic.. it may be not.

He wasn't eating much anyway, that was the reason for taking him to the vet.

Goddammit, just found a thread about coccidia.. the wee dude had the same symptoms as mine and got the same medication.. and he died!:(

Aww, good luck! We had to treat our cham for worms, we used panacur (fenbendazole). It stressed him, but he survived, pooped out some dead worms, and is now good to go.

Good luck, I hope everything turns out ok!

He puked today after we gave him meds.. and I found sick from yesterday with the stuff he ate yesterday.. Goddammit..
what the hell.. how am I supposed to treat him if he pukes it up..

and all I can do is sit and cry like an idiot until the vet is open on Monday

Continue with the medication as prescribed until Monday. Maybe try to dose him with 1/2 of what was prescribed, and the other 1/2 if he sucessfully takes the 1st treatment.

This will be a long process. You have to be diligent and don't take any shortcuts. Keeping the enclosure clean is of the utmost importance. Even after you seem to be out of the woods, you still will need follow up tests to be sure. This will take weeks, not days. You can do this, but it will not be easy!

He is getting hospitalized on Monday. What's the deal with my luck?? First Ripley had egg issues, now my baby is sick.. ugh :(
well, at least they will make sure he gets his medicines. My poor wee bugger
I wonder though if the insurance company would find a reason not to refund the money again
