Babysitting Cham-- looks sick

I am so glad to hear she is going to Elisa where she'll be in the best hands possible. You possibly saved her life, and hopefully she'll live for years to come:D Good work!

I think you made or helped the chameleon's owners make the right choice. But if you do ever get a chemeleon my all means get to know Dr. Greek. He was wonderful with my guys, not cheap but really worth it. I have found one here in Montana like him but the guy is 5 hours away. Good Luck

I just got home from dropping her off with Elisa. She is in good hands now. Thank you all for your input, I greatly appreciate it.

Elisa seemed confident that she will recover and be able to live with a good home. I am so relieved and glad that she will be happy!

I am hoping one day to own a nice, big, healthy panther of my own! :)

I'm so glad you made the right decision. You probably saved its life. If you keep posting here you will learn a lot. Goodluck.

Keep Fingers Crossed

Hi Chambabysitter1,

Thank you for deciding not to euthanize. :) You're right that she is in pretty bad shape, but we will work to turn her around. She will never be perfect and she won't have the longevity of a healthy Veiled, but at least she has a chance at survival. Thanks for looking me up!

I am babysitting a chameleon for my next door neighbor, as they are out of town for the week.

No, thank you! I am just so glad she will change a chance now. It broke my heart to see her struggle and I'd only had for a couple of days.

I am glad she sparked an interested in chameleons for me because had I not taken the time to look any of this up, I would have just misted her three times a day, fed her, and sent her back to her family... they had no idea she was in such bad shape either. I now have a newfound appreciation and respect for chameleons and cannot wait to have one of my own someday.

Thank you so much for doing what you can for her. It's never fair for any animal to die if it doesn't have to and the resources are available.

I cannot say thank you enough!

yay :) glad to hear this

Been thinking about this girl all day. I really hope she is alright. The poor owner felt so guilty and sad. I mean, he's just a child, he didn't mean for any of this to end up like the way it did.
Anyways, she's in my thoughts, I hope for the best.

Don't be sad. Tell the kid not to be sad either. Parents are ultimately responsible for the animals their children keep. And even when the pet store is vague in providing care information, there are so many places to get the information these days. You did it in just a short period of time while cham-sitting. Tell him not to be discouraged and maybe later he will want to try again but with the right information.

She is eating and getting some natural sunshine, believe it or not, through this storm. The clouds part ways over Woodland Hills occasionally. She was first in a small tub over night, then this morning I set the tub inside of a small cage. When she got enough energy, she climbed up to the top branch and perched there.

I've got her started on Neocalglucon drops and one of my vets will see me on Friday morning. So don't worry. My biggest challenge will be when she matures and if/when she starts developing egg buds.

I explained to him what a Herpetologist was what can be done for her that we can't provide. He ultimately understood, but of course this didn't make things easier. I agree about the parents needing to take more responsibility in their children's pets. I suggested a box turtle or leopard gecko, something more low maintenance.

I am so glad to hear she's getting some of those UVBs finally. I would have loved to rehabilitate her myself, but I am much more relieved to hear she is in the hands of an expert and somebody who absolutely cares. Here's hoping to a good future.

In other news, my quest to owning a healthy chameleon continues. I got networked to a member of the South Bay Keepers and am going to get as informed as much as I can. I won't let the little sick one discourage me from owning.

Once again, thank you so much Elisa. You are an amazing person for doing this. I know the animal wasn't my responsibility in the end, but it was such a weight off my shoulders letting her go to you.

So glad to hear this worked out so well. It's also nice to hear the owners having the courage to admit they were in over their heads and agreed to let you send her off to Elisa.

Hi Chambabysitter1,

Does she have a name? Sometimes people like to keep the original name of the chameleon.

We adopted a pitbull a few years ago and the owner at that time called her Sweetness. We promptly changed it to Maggie. I read somewhere that "Maggie" is one of the most common dog names used. I didn't know. I thought we were clever and I was inspired by my friend Jaylyn in Canada who had a female veiled named Maggie. But come on... Sweetness???

She wasn't really named by the original owner. Just called his "Lizowd".

Maggie or Sweetness are both adorable. She is definitely sweet. Sweet Maggie even.
